Best way to clean the block?

What is the best way to clean the block to get ready for the new heads. Also what size are the taps for the head bolts holes to clean them out? Thanks

To clean the deck surface of the block where the old headgaskets were use a scotchbrite rollock disk similar to what you use to clean the turbo. You DON"T want to scratch the metal surface--no wire brush, sand paper, anything that might remove metal.

I don't know the size of the head bolts but 14 or 16mm comes to mind. Check the headbolts in your gasket set OR your studs. Make sure the bottoms of the bolt holes are dry/oil free--air hose works great.

Thanks! I was thinking scotchbrite but wanted to check with the experts, I only want to do this once and want to do it right the first time!

serface prep and a brass scraper is the correct method.
so far as a tap goes. if your good with a diegrinder you can make your own tap.

Cheezit; Serface prep I take it is like a gasket remover. Would NAPA carry that and is that the name of the chemical? Thanks

dont know about napa. I work at a dealer and motorcraft has it. "metal serface prep".
remember the idea is to remove old gasket material. gasket staining is normal and can not really be removed without removing metal.

I have used the stuff Cheezit mentioned. Good stuff.
