I am thinking about buying a 2000 F250 V10 Lariat 4x4 that has 196K miles on it. It is nearly bone stock except for tires. I was wondering the average life of the V10's and if I should look out for any problems to avoid a large repair bill. Its at a great price because it is in the family. Please help!!

I got mine, same year, almost same mileage (165K), but it's an XLT not a Lariat.

Oil changes and spark plugs are the best things to check for, although mine pitched a fuel pump about a month after I got it. Ball joints if it's a Super Duty, as well as the ESOF vacuum lines if it's a 4X4.

Supposedly these engine are VERY reliable of well taken care of (regular oil changes, spark plug changes and torque checks on the plugs. I have no problem taking mine out to the middle of nowhere for a weekend with my family, I'm not worried it's going to strand me.

Basically worry about the same things as you would with any other vehicle, fluids changes, etc. There are guys on here that have over 300K on their V-10's.

To my knowledge it has been very well maintained. I am very glad to hear that it can go 300K+ if taken care of. I'll be sure to check everything you mentioned. Thanks again!!

Also the exhaust studs. They have a bad habit of breaking. Other than that, you should be GTG.

The mod motors are extremely reliable and long lived if taken care of I've got 191k on a 5.4 runs like new and I know of many 250k mod's out there! Good luck and enjoy it!

Dad has almost 260,000 on his v-10. Pulls 10,000 with it everyday and had had no problems with the engine at all.
