regens every 125 to 150 miles--should I be worried ?

have had the truck about 2 months now(08 job 2 with 60000+ on the clock)

seems like the first couple regens went off about 400 mi. in between ; then they went to 200 to 250 , now down to 125 or a bit more at times ; and these events are finished in about 8 miles of 2-lane highway driving .

oil is creeping up , 1/2 quart to maybe 1 quart in not quite 2000 mi. since my first oil change

antifreeze looks good....holds right steady and tailpipe looks good

fuel milege hanging at 14 to 17 , depending on the driving done
am running Stanadyne diesel treat with every fillup

no check engine lights and truck runs strong and smooth , but the frequent regens worry me ,..... wonder if I could have an injector sloshing out a bit too much fuel ?

very possibel you have a leaking tip

I would like to know this also. Truck runs good just more frequent regens. This has been going on since May. I a considereing going rom Hess diesel to BP. Could that help or be the difference?

My 08 has been going into Regen often. In town is is hard to say how often though. On hwy trips all is fine but if I tow my trailer (13K) I seem to go into Regen and Stay there. The last trip it stayed in Regen 80 miles out of the 135 I drove. Took it to the shop and they say it is normal. They also did some sort of ECM update which has lowered my MPG.

I have an 09 and they did a pcm recalibration #091608A, last June and my truck hardly ever regens anymore. And it even gets a little better fuel mileage. Of course a lot of the driving I do is either towing mountain roads or just driving the mountains. Keeping the heat up in these engines reduces the amount they regen.

In town I am not sure but on highways at 65 I regen about every 160 miles and at 80 I only make it about 120 miles between. It has been that way since new, this is not towing but with a quad, four adults, and gear. I have never seen it go over 200 miles between a regen.

Good luck! my regens went down to about 30-50 miles apart, max 100.... dealer said it was normal, they found nothing. About 4 dealers that is...... Idiots know nothing there....If there is no code they are f'n clueless...

I have an 09 and the dealer did pcm recalibration #091608A as a recall and the amount of regens went down alot (used to be once per tank) to the tune of "only when needed". Took the truck from VA to GA and back (~1500 miles) and only saw regen 2 times. Getting better mileage now as well (~18-19 hwy, ~15 city).

What is your commute like?

I went from a minimum 104 mile roundtrip commute which was mostly freeway speeds (65+) to a max 45 mile commute at town speeds (40 mph) and I regen about every other day. Pipe is fine. Get out on the highway and it still regens every 400-500 miles like it should.

i had similiar problems. turned out to be a dirty air filter. my filter minder does not work and i was relying on it to know when to change my filter. i finally replaced the filter with an s&b and my regens went back to 450. i then had the warranty reflash done and since that time i have seen regen intervals as high as 750 miles with light freeway driving.

Impossible. PCM will command a regen at just over 600 miles if one has not occurred.

More than likely it has gone thru the cycle and you have not noticed it. Since the message just briefly displays with the newer flashes it is easy to miss.

aquaman 09-18-2011 12:52 PM

I rarely notice my regen message flash. The only way I know when it regens is when boost drops a lot lower than usual on light-mid throttle and the engine starts feeling sluggish and sounding different. On the freeway, it's harder to notice and a lot easier to miss from all the road noise.

The other dead giveaway is belching white smoke. It just did it to me again yesterday about a minute after regen started as I accelerated onto the freeway from a long stoplight. It all clears up within 15-30seconds--after I've fumigated everyone behind.

For the times regen wasn't allowed to finish completely, it'll restart sooner than my usual 250-300miles. Mine will restart roughly 10-20miles per mile that was driven while regening earlier.

Sounds like your truck is ok, but did you change fuel brands recently? I ran Valero once, and I was regening all over the map and mpgs sucked. I'm averaging 14-14.5 around town, and I just checked in with 17.0 yesterday on a 180mile freeway trip with 1 complete regen

jdcass 09-18-2011 01:13 PM

Possible!

i reset my lom everyday so that i can see the drop in mileage when a regen starts. regens use alot of fuel and that is an easy way to tell when your regen cycle starts. i use my tripometer to track distances.
