Horn Problems Need help
 
Have a 02 excursion limited. Only have had it about 4 months. Everything was fine til about 2 weeks ago when i went camping up in the mountains and i got a rude awakening by my horn blasting at 2:30 A.M.:-arrgh. Ran out in my underwear trying to get it to stop. After about 2 mins the horn finally just stopped. So i went back to sleep and then about an hour later the horn blow again but for only about 3 secs then died. The next morning got up and looked at the fuse and it was blown so i replaced it and everything worked fine the rest of the trip. I got home from camping and no sooner get it in the driveway and it does it again. Blow the fuse again. So i decided to get online and see what i can find. Everywhere i read said that it is most likely the clockspring. So i replaced the clockspring and everything was working good for a couple days. I got in the truck yesterday and notice the horn didnt work again. Checked the fuse and sure enough blown. So now I'm kinda confused on my next step. I wish it was something simple as replacing the horn. How many horns does the truck have? Cause ever since the first time the horn went off in the mountains and after replacing the fuse the horn just doesnt seem as loud so maybe i burnt up one of the horns? i have read a lot online were some ppl say its something to do with the cruise control. i know that both are on the same circuit. if anyone could maybe lead me somewhere to start would be very happy. if i cant find out soon then just going to take it to the dealership :-arrgh and watch them drain my wallet. thanks

I had similar problem....changed clockspring.....nothing......fast forward a year and a half later when i finally get fed up with no horn or cruise....traced it back to just below the clockspring connector behind the steering wheel....the circle of metal on the back of the airbag was digging into the wires on one side of the clockspring connector and grounding it out....3" piece of electrical tape and horn and cruise are back on line.

I had the same problem. Replaced clockspring which did not help. The horn continued to blow the fuse if I used it or the cruise. One of the guys here suggested checking the horn for a short. That was the problem,I replaced it and it's doing fine ever since..... FYI the horns are behind the front bumper passenger side. I think the only practical way in is to remove the inner fender liner.

BTW I used a horn from a Ranger I had and it is a wimp. Get a good one, I have got to go back and replace that sucker as soon as I have time.

i just pulled off the airbag and looked at all the wires and everything looks fine. is there 2 horns behind the bumper? i was thinking maybe just the horn is shorting out but how do you test for it?

There are two horns but on one mounting bracket...

I replaced mine with a Wolo Bad Boy air horn just like this ... Amazon.com: Wolo Model 419 Bad Boy Black One Piece Design Air Horn Kit - 12 Volt: Automotive

Have you checked the relay for the horn?

Just changed one of my horns that was not working and was hoping that was the problem but when I got back home last night all my neighbors were standing outside cause my horn was blasting again son of a b#$@&. I really dont know what to do now but take it to the dealer. Is there a relay for the horn and where is it

I know the horn fuse under the hood is number 14. I think it might be relay 206 or 210 not sure I will check.

Stop, wait!!!! Before you waste more time and money (like I did). Look at the front of your airbag cover, is it beaten up, crushed in, or anthing like that? That's what was wrong with mine. I still don't know what to call the thing, but under the airbag is a "horn pressure thingy". My steering wheel was so beaten up that it had damaged the pressure sensor and all I had to do was get the dent out of it. Been working fine since. But at least I don't have to worry about having to chang my clockspring for a while.

Did you just take the front off of the steering wheel ? Mine is beaten up and neither my horn or cruise works.

I took off the airbag assembly, on the back side are two star bit screws. Once off you can peal the front cover from the AB assembly and you're see a branze colored "thingy" (sorry I don't know the name of it). Mine had a two inch fold in it that was causing it to short. I just bent the fold out and replace. Works great!

i have the airbag unit in hand and i pulled off the cover but i dont know really what im looking for. all i see is like a redish plastic looking thing sandwiched between the cover and a black plastic hard piece. is the redish thing you were talking about

If you took the airbag assembly off the steering wheel and then peeled the cover up (the part that is looking you in the face when driving, the reddish brown part that is very thin is what he is talking about. This is the switch/button that actuates the horn.
