51 F1 with a 460/C6?!?

Hello all. I'm new to FTE as well as the restoration scene. So any advice, even random, would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently decided that it is past time that I do something with my '51 F1. So I started talking to those of my friends that are gear-heads, trying to get an idea of all the directions that I might need to go. For now I want to leave the body as it is, with the exception of straitening the right-side running board. But I want to have a monster of a drivetrain.

So, on with my primary questions: Will a 460/c6 fit into this truck? How much harder than say, a 302, would this be? I have a lead on a $600 running 1970-something lincoln continental with a 460/c6. Also, it was suggested that I use the rear end from this car. I haven't measured anything yet, but if its close would it be comparable to a 9"?

I've searched the forum, but i haven't been able to find a thread that addresses this. So feel free to direct me to any that you know of.

Yes, it will fit. Yes you will have to do some mods to crossmembers, probably the firewall and floor. With the torque of the 460 you'll probably want to box the frame rails.

Any rear end that came stock with a 460 should be beefy enough for your truck. Width of the axle is the primary consideration - I can't tell you how wide a 70's something lincoln was. But you'll be doing so many chassis mods already that fitting the rear under the truck won't be much additional work.

All in all a cool project. It won't happen overnight. You'll start by pulling the sheetmetal off the frame. Just know what you're getting into before you start. Don't do it half-elbowed and follow thru to completion. And take lots of pictures.... good luck!!

A Lincoln with a 460 in it most likely has a 9" rear end.

The differential will be too wide, if you get a narrower 9 inch empty housing you can use the gear unit but not the axles. This is what two years and $ 22,000.00 will get you.

Thank you guys for your help. I now plan to proceed to get the 460/C6. I look forward to all that this project will entail. I do plan to take a lot of pictures, if only to reward those whose help I will surely need. I may also have things to sale/trade as I pull and replace parts. So stay tuned.
