im in the middle dont have a problem with either motor. pulled stuff with both. iv never had a problem pulling with my 5.0 then as for every one saying they tack up pulling i cant say mine does. idk if bein since my trannys has been tweaked a bit for pulling has any effect on the tacking up part but mine seems to pull just fine..with a AOD trans and 3.55s

alot of it is dollars and sense, if you don't have any sense you will blow your dollars and engine. If you drive smart it doesn't matter what you have. I have a dt466 & sevral 7.3s now and still drive by the tach and not the speedo. watching the dumb azz with black smokers is watching money go in the air, I use all my fuel-tune your truck.

Ive owned my 302 for close to two years now in my 94 with 142k on it. It had 119 when I got it. I take 50 mile trips on the highway with it twice a week. I love how smooth it is and it definately has no problem keeping up on the highway. It gets great mileage for a full size truck. It will out run a 318 or a 305 any day of the week. The only con with the motor I have is the pulling power. Ive pulled trucks bigger than mine on trailers with this truck. Ive had zero problems, its just the low end torque isnt that great but thats to be expected with the 302. I am not complaining, it still got the job done with no problems.

I know it's been said millions of times (and a few in this thread), but I will reiterate...opinions, like armpits, usually have value only to the individual they belong to. And yes, sometimes they do stink, even if the owner doesn't realize it.

With that in mind, nothing is going to be resolved in this thread, any other thread about a 4.9 vs a 5.0, or any other thread PERIOD as long as it's all a matter of opinion and personal experiences. In some cases, it is perhaps also a matter of driving skill. Then again, a lot of folks would have to find something else to argue about if they didn't have this... and some would have to concede defeat... so perhaps a resolution isn't really welcome.

Personally, I think this "debate" is pointless. People like what they like and don't like what they don't like. The fact is, it's just the one tenth of a liter separating these engines that seems to fuel the debate... if we were talking about the 240 I6 vs the 302 V8 or the 300 I6 vs. the 255 V8, would it be such a heated topic?

We're talking about two entirely different designs here. Reasonable comparison would be the Ford 250 I6 vs the Chevy 250 I6...or the Ford 302 V8 to the Chevy 305 V8...the Ford 460 to the Chevy 454... the Ford 351 to the Chevy 350. Similar designs + similar sizes = sensible conclusions.

So what exactly are we trying to accomplish here? Do the 5.0 guys expect to "convert" the 4.9 guys and vice versa? Or are we just wasting time and working ourselves closer to carpal tunnel syndrome for no apparent reason?

wait.......chevy made a straight 6???? now im curious

Actually yes, and a very good one at that. It was one of their better engines for quite some time, very comparable to Ford's 240 I6, IIRC.

ryito1122334455 07-17-2011 01:08 AM

what years and makes/models had this atraight 6? i love straight 6;s of all kinds??! was there ever a straight 8? lol that'd be cool! well infio on engines with the best reliability are my key focus....tho i outta be worried about tranksmissions, sinnce they seem to me my main problem

big-ugly 07-17-2011 01:36 AM

Take a look at wikipedia. It is full of the information you are looking for, and I won't have to do the research and type it all up for you.

ryito1122334455 07-17-2011 11:19 AM

wow, i really learned allot, ferrari had a straight 8....interesting that the 6 is way more reliable tho, due to vibrations from "crankshaft whip" on the 8's

big-ugly 07-17-2011 11:55 AM

Pretty neat stuff, huh?

I had a 78 Camaro and a 82 Scottsdale that both had a 250 I6. Solid running, relatively under powered and very noisy.
