Need help please!
 

Hello all,

Thank you for having this forum. I do need a little help I have a 93 F-150 4wd. I have a problem with a "rubbing" noise sounds as if it is coming from the front left. I took it to a shop yesterday to have it checked and they told me it is the "axle" joint and rotors causing an issue. I also have a bad vibration that you can feel all over the truck once you get to about 40mph. A popping noise sometimes does happen when making a hard right turn. I have read around some places on the net and found this is some symptoms of a U-joint. So my question would be is the "axle" joint as it was called really the axle U-joint as I have also read that ford uses U-joint instead of CV Joints.

Another symptom with this has been with steering for example when i make a right or left turn instead of the wheel coming back to center like normal i actually have to pull it back to center i thought that it was over sterring but the mechanic drove it yesterday and described that problem to me also said the axle joints could lock and cause even more damage if i drive to much.

I appologize that I am not the most mechanically inclined person but any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, seems like frozen universal joints in the front axle shafts. If you look behind each front wheel you will see a gap between the steering knuckle and the axle tube and you will see the universal joints in plain view.

Thank you very much. I wanted to make sure i was going to purchase the right parts. I have an appointment Tuesday morning but need to get the parts tomorrow. They said it would take roughly 2 hours to do each side. I was confused with where they called it an axle joint couldnt find axle joint anywhere and only U-joint info I could find was talking about the driveshaft. Thank you for clarifying that for me

No problem. Around 2 hrs per side sounds about right.

Ok I apologize again for seeming completely clueless, and I am not sure if I am supposed to link to other sites from here and if not I am sorry for that as well, but this is to my local auto parts store, and I am curious if this is the right part I will be looking to replace?

It shows for 4wd, but I am just wanting to be sure I am getting the right part. I did go to the truck and checked the axle with it sitting and it does move quiet a bit and I read that 3/8" or more is bad or it is not supposed to move at all.

Put that joinit in there you'll be doing it again in six months, they are junk will never hold up.

Buy Dana Spicer u joints, myself I prefer the grease through one cap style.

Few bucks more up front yea but will save you a small fortune in the long run.

Thanks for the advice and there is only 2 that i need right one on the left and one on the right?

yea man I have dana joints on my truck (original owner put them in I believe when the truck was purchased) and they have at least 205,000 some change miles on them, still kickin well :) tho I may need to get the looked at and see if its time to replace mine as well, but im having no issues so im not fixing things if it aint broken ;)

There is three total on a TTB drive axles, one inboard on the passenger side at the pig.

You'll want to check it and replace if necessary, tend to outlast the outers by a margin 2 or even 3 to 1 depend on truck use/abuse.

If its tight or worn replace it now as you'll be to it, more likely to be found partially froze up then worn out.

Its not easy/fun to replace while working under the truck but it can be done. Correct way is to drop the pig remove the stub shaft, that is a lot of work though!

Ok thanks I will buy 3 so they can check they third one as well. If it doesnt need to be replaced I will return it.
