backfires

2007 F-350 6.0L, Wife phoned and said that the truck backfired a couple of times and there was black smoke from exhaust. When she stopped at idle there is now alot of white smoke but coolant level looks fine. She has about 200 km's to go before she is home pulling a 20 foot horse trailer with 1 horse. any ideas!

Ask her to smell the smoke--sweet for coolant; diesel = obvious. coolant would be EGR cooler--diesel an injector. backfire= not good period. How many miles on the truck.

smoke leaves a bad tatse in your mouth. 240,000km's. think it might be the turbo.

My truck backfired when it was first new and the service manager told me diesels don't back fire, and the next thing I knew they removed the pre injection and there went the fuel milage.

This is the first time I have ever heard of a diesel back firing.

I think that the injectors stuck open. She went through about 75 l's of fuel in about 125 km's. Now the engine won't turn over. almost like it is ceased. Don't know if it could be the HPOP.

Sounds like it might be hydro locked from an injector dumping way too much fuel. I wouldn't try starting it again, because if it is hydrolocked that might cause some serious damage.. IMO it's time to put it on a flatbed and get it to where it's going to be repaired.

Skinner F350 06-26-2011 01:12 PM

Yes, I agree. I just got to the truck and hooked the trailer to my other truck so the wife can go home. Just waiting for a tow home.

Skinner F350 06-26-2011 01:20 PM

Pulled codes. P2290Injector control pressure to low
P0238 turbo/supercharger boost sensor a circuit high
P0304 Cyl #4 misfire detected
P0478 exhaust pressure control valve high input.

BLADE35 06-26-2011 03:16 PM

looks like a bad #4 injector stuck on overpressurizing things dumping in fuel and looks like HPO is running threw it causing your low ICP

I assume your towing to the dealer

Skinner F350 06-26-2011 04:51 PM

No, I towed it home. Now I have to do some research about repairing the problem. I would think that I will become very intimite with this engine..

BLADE35 06-26-2011 08:46 PM

injectors are not to bad to get out and do

I just figured it was an 07 still under warreny

does number4 cylinder inject even buzz at all when you do a buzz test

dont try and start it may hydrolock

my 6.0 been good to work on learned alot here on fte great bunch of guys to help me fix it

now I look at a 6.4 and it scares me love that 6.0

Check your oil level to see if it's really high. You could have had an injector seal fail and be getting exhaust into the fuel rail OR fuel into the oil pan.

The codes are kind of puzzling also. They indicate a MAP sensor and exhaust pressure sensor problem or VGT problem. P2290 is related to high pressure oil but you could have plenty of HPO and still get a P2290. Possibly an electrical problem for ALL these codes?????

Did she hit a gas station just before this happened, maybe filled up with gasoline instead of diesel?

cartmanea 06-27-2011 09:56 AM

Pull the glow plugs and crank it over to evacuate the cylinders, replace #4 injector, and pray you don't have a bent rod.
