99 ranger fuel pump problem?

I have a 99 ford ranger 3.0 v6 that just started having problems. While going up hill I noticed if I pushed the accelerator to the floor, it was like I lost all power. Then it got to the point where still going up hill it was losing power. When I down shifted it would accelerate but then started losing power in lower gears also. Now, from a dead stop, in first gear, it has no power when you take off and it takes a while to gain power, it's the same thing through all gears. Is it the fuel pump going out? any ideas?

Gosh, thanks, that was such helpfull and insightfull information concerning my problem. Turns out it was a hego sensor that went out. Not that big of a deal. Good dealership, good service. But thanks again for the witty, useless comment.
