No Power to Fuel Pump on E350 Cutaway with 460

Hi, I'm getting no power to the Fuel pump in my 87 Econoline 350 Motorhome. It has the 460 in it. I checked all fuses and I already reset the fuel pump cutoff switch and still no power. Where can I start??

Okay so I pulled out the Fuel Pump relay (At least I think it is) It was screwed to the underside of the rad support on the drivers side. I took it in to the local autoparts store and since there is no part numbers on the relay they looked on the computer for "87 E350 fuel pump relay" and they had a completly different relay. Theirs had 5 pins and mine has 4. I'm just wondering if I pulled the right one now?? Pics are attached below.

Do you recall were there fifth pin was? From the pic it almost looks like there's a missing pin under the one on the right side.

no pin has fallen out, not even on the connector its been deleted. Apparently this is the old style relay and all the autoparts stores now carry a new style that has 5 pins.

oh ok..i wasnt sure..i just looks like theres pin missin from the top right there..just was an idear.

Yes that is a fuel pump relay.
Do you have a fuel injected engine or do you have Carb on it?

Also check the ecm relay and the connector next to it,When my ecm relay went bad, i had no fuel pump, and no check engine light.

It has a carb

Not likely the Fuel Pump relay as you say you have no power to it.
If you do not have a test light get one as it will make it a lot easier to find the problem as a meter will have you going in circles.
A test light with a bulb in it will load the circuit and a meter will give false readings in the fuel circuit.

First jump out the oil pressure switch and then see if both fuel pumps run when you turn on the key. Also jumping out the oil switch will allow you to trouble shoot the circuit without cranking the engine to check the fuel circuit and running the battery down.
Does the fuel pumps run now when you turn on the key?

By the way you have a 1986 E350, the 1987 was FI.
Use 1986 E350 when buying parts.
Your 1987 Title is for the home part and not the Ford part.
Check your VIN for the year.

Oil switch jumped photo below and is located on the top rear of the engine.

I do have power going to the relay on some wires, I will double check which ones and tell you later today. If that fails I'll refer to oil switch troubleshooting you posted.

The VIN Sticker from ford says it was built on 4/13/87, and the actual motorhome was built in June of 87. The VIN # for the chassis is: 1FDKE30L5HHB54881

I though they went FI in 87 but guess it was 88. Thanks for the information.
I take it you are saying you only have power on the Yellow wire at the fuel pump relay socket.
Also check the wires under the relay socket for good connections.
The above wiring diagram still apples to your unit.
Have you checked for power on both sides of Fuse #18 in the fuse panel with the key on?

synergy141 06-15-2011 01:10 PM

I just checked with the key on and only the wire that is black with the yellow stripe is getting power.

KEY ON:

(These are the wires at the relay plug with the relay plugged in)

Blk/yellow: Has power
Red/ blk stripe: No
All Black Wire: No
Red/ yellow stripe: No

I have a feeling its the relay but all my auto parts stores have a different relay in their system. Even the online stores have the same relay as the local shops. They all have 5 pin's and mine is a 4. This is the part everyone is giving me and it's wrong: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=936884

The wire you are calling Red with a black stripe is Pink with a black stripe.
The red wire with a Yellow stripe only will have power on it with the key on and you have the oil pressure up (engine running) and with a good fuse #18.

Maybe this will help:
