V10 good motor?
I am looking at buying a '99 F250 Super Duty V10. I don't know anything about the V10. Is it a good motor or does it have some problems that I should be aware of?

Go to the V10 forum, lots of good information in there. I had the later 3 valve version of the V10 in a 2005 F250 and loved it. In my opinion it is or is close to the best engine I ever owned. It is a bit thirsty though.

Nope! Mechanics hate em! They just keep going and going!
Sarcasm of course, I have 3 of them and love 'em! :-X22 |
you wont find a more dependable truck motor in a SD.
the only issues the V10 of that vintage can suffer from will be exhaust manifold studs rusting/breaking off. or spark plugs ejecting, if not properly torqued when changed/installed. these motors are super fussy about having the plugs put in with a torque wrench, not just "feels tight" with a rachet. |
No, it is a GREAT motor. As said, some spit the spark plugs if they are over torqued or under torqued, it is pretty rare though. Lots of ways to repair that if it does happen though.

I love my '99 V10. I think the trick to happiness is to not to drive the newer 3 valve version so the '99 won't suffer from the comparison. It is an awesome engine and a great tow machine!

V10
I love mine v10. I had a 6.0 diesel that LOVED the repair shop. I can't believve that v10 it has not been in for some repair.

Well we do have over 11,000 replies on the subject already.

Good engine? No, sorry....
It is a GREAT engine! The '99 had the lowest output, with a nice bump in 2000 with the PI heads and intake (which can be added to your truck) and then another bump in 2005 with the 3V heads. Very, very few V10 owners are anything but delighted with them. And those that are not are usually victims of bad spark plug installations, or folks who are wishing for 20 mpg. IMHO, the exhaust stud/nut rusting and breaking issue is the only real problem with them - especially in areas where road salt is used. |
I LOVE MINE. I did years of reading and research and looking before I bought mine.
I bought it for the following reasons with the idea I plan on keeping this truck for 20 years or so! Cost up front much lower than diesel I don't tow or haul often enough in my mind to justify the diesel but I need lots of power sometimes. By 2008 version most of the kinks had been worked out (I hope). I bought truck knowing fuel mileage was going to be around 14 mpg on average |
:-winkThanks for the info. I'm going shopping. See ya!

Good luck! BTW if it was still available I would have ordered one instead of the new 6.2 I have on the way. I liked my 05 3 valve that much.
