Lug nuts breaking
well i think i have a pretty serious problem, i noticed a slight banging noise coming from my passenger side wheel, so i checked it out and i seen that 3 of my lug nuts have broken off. I do not understand why my lugs would break. Also do you have to take off the caliper to replace the lug bolts. man this is kinda really worrying me any input appriciated. thanks. Nathan

I've broken a few off the rear drums before. Guess I tightened them a bit much....I'm not sure how the SRW front hubs are set up that way, but somebody will chime in.
|
The cause is more than likely human error. Probably a few were left loose last time the wheel was put on. But who knows. I'd replace all the studs. Check the lug nuts on all the other wheels. The hub will have to be removed to replace them.

One more thing. The wheel may be toast too if the holes are rounded out or the wheel bent. One tire shop bought me a set of new wheels because they did not tighten the lug nuts properly.

who took your hubs off? and what were the lugs torqued to?
|
well i was just going to do them my self but i ended up paying my machanic to do it and im not sure what he torqed them to, what the specs on that???
|
140 lb ft______
|
Torque depends on what is recommended by the wheel manufacturer. IIRC my Alcoa wheels are 115 lbs.

I tighten mine as tight as I can get them and then go a half round more!
;) |
140 on a 250
|
allright so i tightened my lugs prety tight but i am afraid that i am going to break more. The thing is they loosened up again so i tightened them again but tighter i am going to get out my torke wrench. i dont know why this just started happening but i know i did not hit any curbs with that side???

Do you know the difference between hub centric and lug centric wheels? Which do you have and are you using the right lug nuts? I've heard of similar issues when using lug centric nuts on hub centric wheels.
