how many quarts of oil?
Hello,
I'm going to check the pricing on oil to see if I can save any by changing it myself. I have an 00 X with 7.63. I've always taken it to the dealer to have the oil chaned, cost around $60-$70. I don't remember. Can someone tell me how many quarts this motor holds? I seem to remember that it's around 12. Thanks for the input, Joe |
17 quarts .... . and i have already priced it and its cheaper to have jiffy lube do the oil changes
|
Something to consider...
Jiffy lube does not care about your truck. They want to make as much money as possible. As such, they will use the cheapest filter and oil they can find. Do some searching on 6.0 oil filters and you will find using anything but the good stuff is a bad idea. You can argue oil is oil, but I like putting quality oil in the engine...very cheap insurance. Usually it is hard to beat oil shop prices, but you'll be using better products doing it yourself. Watch for stuff to go on sale and you can get pretty good prices. I got Mobil1 for $20/gal and the good filters online for about $14 I think. So say $94ish for a synthetic oil change. |
My 03 7.3 took 14 quarts with filter change. Use the best oil and filter you can!
|
It seems to vary slightly between years - most 7.3's take between 14-15 quarts. Start with 14 and after starting it and verifying no leaks, turn it off and let it sit for a couple of mins and check the level again. Make sure either you (or your shop) is pre-filling the filter with oil - it holds about 1/2 a quart.

if your ok with walmart $19.00 gallon for rottella synthetic c6 15w40. They also have the ford filters, sometimes:)
|
I take it to the dealer. I called today for a price and it was $62.00. They use 10-40 oil and, of couse, uses the ford oil filter. I think it would be about even, price wise.
Thanks for the help. BTW, one time they did it, Ford dealer in Leavenworth, KS. they didn't get the drain plug on tight and the oil drained out while my wife and two of my kids were driving it in sub-zero weather. Thank the Lord, some firefighters would driving by and stopped and gave my family a ride to the fire station. It had been a loooong time since I was that angry and upset. They admitted their mistake, but didn't even get an apology. They pay kids $7.00 per hour to work on a 50k truck. Go figure. Joe |
It's always cheaper and safer to do it yourself, plus you get a little more familiar with your truck. I saw a kid drain the tranny instead of the engine by mistake one time and I didn't stick around to see where he put the oil. When 2 novices are working on it at one time it is easy to screw it up. I would never let anyone change mine.:-hair

I buy oil in gal jugs (Mobil Delvac 1300) at Sam's Club for $42.52 a case (includes tax). They also have Rotella and sometimes others for the Diesels.
Walmart (which is right next door to SAM's) has the Ford filters ffor the 7.3L at $9.95 each (plus tax). I put a Fumoto valve on the drain pan and don't even get a drop of oil anywhere it shuldn't be plus I know that it's been done correctly. I end up spending less than $55 to change the oil myself. I also pull a sample off and send to Blackstone Labs using the money I saved by doing it myself to pay for the Oil analysis ($25). Bottom line is I get the oil changed AND understand more about how the engine is "wearing" for about the same cost as the Delaer Oil change only. Yes I do get coupons every so often from the Ford Dealership with "specials" but I like knwoing whose had their hands on one of the most ciritcal aspects of maintenance for a diesel. D |
BTW - The Ford Oil filter holds 2 quarts of oil........ I always pre-fill it to almost full before spinning it on. Also mark the date and mileage on the filter w/ a Sharpie in case I can't read my writing in my Minatenace log............
