'88 F250 stalls and sputters randomly

So I have been reading around a little bit and I am confused on the issue here. My uncle is selling his old F250 and I want a home owner truck. So I drive it around on the front tank and all seems to be well. Front tank is showing almost empty so I switch it to the rear tank. Start to drive it home and about 1/4 mile down the road it just loses power, sputters, wont go when the peddle is pressed, however, it didn't die though. It eventually fixed itself and I went on down the road. Then it happened again. So turn around and head back to his house. It happened 2 or 3 more times. Barely got back.

Anyways been reading that it has something to do with the fuel pump/check valve/something else fuel pump related. The front tank seemed to run fine, but once switched to the rear I had issues. What would be the fix for this? Check valve? Detector switch? Bad rear fuel pump?

Uncle in law said he wasn't aware of any issues but he hasn't drove it in a while. Could it be a frayed harness somewhere? Really would like to get it running well because it is a perfect get dirt, rock, lumber, beat the crap out of it truck.
