I've had my '91 Bronco now about 5 months and everything has been going well.

This past weekend I went out and backed out of the driveway. When I shifted from reverse to drive the truck just sat there. After about 10 seconds, it shifted into drive and worked fine. I've checked and topped off the fluid. It was less than ½ quart low. Once it is in drive it works fine, it just the first time after being in another gear. Can someone give me things to check?

My bronco does the same exact thing. Is it cold where you are? If it is are you letting it warm up? I only say this because mine only seems to do this when it is cold and when I first start it up. My friend told me that it just needs some time to warm up. I hope thats the case anyway.....:D

It's in the 50's and 60's here right now.

It continues to do this even after I have driven the truck 20 or 30 miles.

BTW I have a E40D. I see that I forgot to put that.

You can pull the codes to see if the computer has noticed the problem. How old are the fluid & filter?

Not 100% for sure. Truck has 185000 miles on it. The fluid is not dark but I can't say about the filter.

Clogged filter will reduce fluid flow and pressure. Low pressure is the most common reason for slow response. Just my $.02.

You just have to let the tranny warm up if it is below anything like 65. If you don't let it sit for a minute it will not engage. If it is something else let me know because mine does the same thing. If I start the engine then immediatly slam it into drive, I can rev it all it wants but it will just sit there for like 30 secs.

You should not have to let the transmission warm up for any length of time, especially if it's 65 degrees. You've got some problems if it takes that long to engage.

I know that with the old C4's and C6's, the tranny would first do what yours is doing, then after a while they would only go into reverse. I am not sure if the newer E4OD trannies have the same symptoms, but back in the day if my C6 started taking a while to go from reverse to drive when cold, I knew that the tranny was on its way out.

I have a '87 Bronco with a C6. I have had it for 3 years. For 3 years I have had the same problem. I don't think it has anything to do with cold weather, I live in Florida. I was told by a reputable mechanic that this is caused by a bad low-reverse seal in the trannies valve body. Mine, I just rev it up 3 or 4 times and she goes into gear. Do some research, call different trannie shops, there usually willing to help because they want your buisness.:)

I went to Autozone and had them pull the codes.

It came up with 327, 328, 332, 334, and 452.

Looks like I've got some probs with my EGR Valve. Would the 452 code being some of my problem?

I'm going to change the fluid/filter this weekend.

What type of transmission is it? And what year truck did it come out of?

the c6 in my 77 f-150 used to do that even after changing the filter, flushing ALL of the fluid, and cleaning out the valve body. check the adjustment on the bands .. you can adjust them from the outside of the tranny, if they are alright i would suggest a rebuild or a new tranny before you get stuck somewhere.

Pull the tranny stick out and look at the fluid. Is it burnt? Is it pink? If the fluid is burnt, do not change the fluid. Leave it alone.

When you shift from park to drive or drive to reverse, do you hear a "slipping" sound. Does it shift hard while you drive?

If so, you should have the belts adjusted.

Why would I leave the fluid alone?

It goes right into reverse with no problems. Drive is a different story. When the Transmission is "warm" I can shift the truck into drive and it will sit there for about 10 to 20 secs until it finally goes into gear. I can "rev" the engine up with it in gear and it will move slowly almost like it's not all in gear. Once it goes into gear, it shifts just fine.
