Starter Interchange Compatibility??

I have a 97 Ranger 4 Cylinder and want to know what other vehicles or Ranger years my starter is compatible with. All help is appreciated!

Folks at a salvage yard or at an auto parts retailer should be able to tell you. I checked the listings in my LMC catalog and the newest Ranger they list is for the 91 - 92 model years.

Does anyone know if a starter from a manual transmission ranger will be compatible with an automatic transmission or if off a six cylinder will fit a four cylinder? thanks

It looks like the starter is the same for MT and AT set-ups but each displacement engine has a different starter.

Another option, depending on the condition of your present starter is to get a repair kit. The kit is much less expensive than a remanufactured or new starter.

By the way, have you checked places like J C WQhitney or Rock Auto?

So the starter would need to be from a 2.3L engine in order to fit mine. No starters from any 6 cylinders will ever fit a 4 cylinder engine. Is this correct? Thanks for all your help.

That is correct. I just checked the Rock Auto website - they have a choice of starters available.

I found a starter from a 2003 2.5L engine. Do you know if this will fit a 1997 2.3L Engine?
