The turbo "Y" pipe
 

My wife and I just recently bought ourselves a 2003 F350 dually. Because the previous owner didn't take care of ir properly we have inherited all the problems due to neglect.:-hair :'( However, we are slowly getting these issues solved. The first, was finding a reputable mechanic. We have just taken and spent $1400 to replace the FICM and EGR (FICM screw/pin test prove it bad). We now face an issue with the Y-pipe that goes to the turbo needing to be replaced. According to mechanic, this is a dealer replacement. Is this true or can a reputable muffler shop replace it?:-X16 :confused:

Welcome to FTE. In future posts, be sure to include the fact that you have a 6.0 motor since several engines were available in 2003.

To answer you're question, we really need to figure out what he is calling the Y pipe. Did he show you or describe what the problem is? The Turbo has a Y shaped collector on the back of it that your bellowed up pipes connect to. Those will be dealer items, or if you don't mention it's for a Ford, you can also get them from an International dealer. Those 2 parts are not something that usually go bad, even with neglect, so I'm curious as to what happened to yours.

turbo has to be removed to replace the section that is bad. only way I know of.

Thanks for the replies. The diesel tech did describe this piece as a collector that connects to the turbo. He says that there is a crack/hole in the flex piece of the Y-pipe.

Cheezit, are you saying you have to pull the turbo to get the y-pipe out?

Im not going to speak for him, but I believe thats what he is saying...

But a muffler shop ehh I am not to sure...

Yes he is , and yes you do i just did mine pulling the turbo is the easy part. The bolts holding the pipe together are a PIA but doable

I think getting the bolts and nuts on the pass side is easier then the driver side.

but yes I am. it may be possible to get the y-pipe out by removing the trans but thats way to much effort.

When I called the dealer to see how much it would be to replace my up pipe, he said they might remove the tranny to replace it.

Damn egr delete..
I'm going back to my original thought that the best (cheapest and easiest) delete is to weld up the cooler on both ends. No need to mess with up-pipe or support it.

How much $$ for a y-pipe?

PartsGuyEd is like 170 and like 25 shipping under 2 bills to your house. My local dealer was 285 plus our nice sells tax, almost 300. the welding thing works pretty good if its done right. I left my egr valve in and plugged in looks like stock.

Hott-rodd: Just the y-pipe that connects to the turbo cost me :'($276.60. This does not include all the other little parts for doing the job:-X16.

The mechanic gave me the piece that came off my truck (6.0 L), and sure enough there was a hole in the flex joint. :-X15 There was exhaust soot all over the spot where the holes is at. I notice now that there is better take off and that aweful smell of exhaust coming into the cab is gone.:-drink
Hopefully, all this truck will need is a little TLC to get it where it needs to be.:-X22
