horsepower rating of 351W ?
 

Hello all, I've got a 1980 F-150 with the 351 Windsor. How do I find the horsepower and torque ratings for this motor ? I've been told that certain 351's are highly sought after for building up. And, some of them have special heads that are valuable ? Thanks

Your HP and torque figures will vary depending on the year and fuel setup. As described an earlier thread today, 302s and 351s have shared the same heads since the late 70s. What's more important is getting right head castings. If your heads have E5TE, or E6TE, get rid of them. They don"t breathe very well. The E6s are worse, but you can better than both. E7TEs breathe much better. Ideally you want to find something that has F#ZE on them. Those will be a variant of the GT40 heads. These heads will also be marked with a GT40 on top. Keep in mind that the bolt holes on a 351 head are larger than a 302, so if you get heads from a 302 those holes will need to be enlarged.

BTW, you may want to reach out to a guy with the screename of Conanski. I think he usually views the 87-96 and the 302 forums. He knows as much as anybody on these engines.

If i were to purchase a remanufactured 5.8 to replace my old and tired engine, should i expect the same stock hp and torque? I am new to all this and my engine is just tired and slow and sluggish. Looking to start re-vamping the beast. Any suggestions?

1980 would not have had a 351w stock. It would be a 351m. So either it's a M or the windsor was swapped in.

its a 95 f150.

A stock remanufactured engine is just that. It drops in place and has the same specs as the stock engine had. You can get remanufactured engines in different flavors from different rebuilders though, if you have the money to spend. You need to be careful though, you really can't hop the engine up too much since you have a 95 and it's fuel injected.

Thanks for your reply. I am new to all this so excuse my Green-ness. Would I have to replace transmission as well when replacing stock motor? A friend of mine has told me i would probably need to replace rear end, and tranny. Sounds like a lot of work. I am wondering where i should start, I have found remans of the 5.8 for about 1500 bucks. I have also found a used 5.8 with about 78000 miles on it for about 1000 bucks. Just researching options before I have a game plan to revamp my 95 f150. I love the truck, but man its slow and horrible on fuel. I would like a smoother run if its gonna be this thirsty anyway.. Any suggestions will help immensely!

If you have a 5.8 in it already, a 5.8 made for that same year should drop right in place, no need to change the tranny. If it's a automatic I would change the front seal before putting the new engine in place.

If your engine uses very little oil, doesn't smoke or make odd noises, I would not necessarily swap it out because it doesn't have any power.

Oh thanks. ok well thats true it doesn't smoke or leak. It's just tired and slow. What could I do to improve its performance? without replacing. I have replaced spark plugs/wires. Fuel filter, throttle body cleaned. replaced some exhaust valve.

there is one noise that concerns me. its a chug-a-lugging helicoptor, almost metalic sound. i epecially hear it while going uphill, when it feels like it struggles. it has headers and flowmaster exhaust and this sound is easily heard over the exhaust. anyone know what it could be? bores large from being an old engine? some sort of seal?

Would a rebuild kit with gaskets and all that be something I should try? Other than that I am wondering what engine work will be required. I can do some work on my own but don't have the space to really dig in and learn how to work on my truck. I don't want to be wasting money having mechanics look into certain things.. I guess I am wondering what are a few key things i should get taken care of/looked into before I consider a new engine?
