1988 F150 Custom 4.9 EFI a reliable truck?

New to the forum here. I've been a Ford fan for years, but I'm not well educated on them and just slightly mechanical.
I currently own a 2003 F-150 4x4 Supercrew XLT 4.6 V-8 with 113,000 miles on in it. It has had numerous small repairs since I bought it new, and now it has a blown head gasket. I'm thinking of selling it while it still has some value.
I found a 1988 F-150 Custom 4.9 EFI straight six for sale ($1500) that has 97,000 actual miles on it. It is your basic work truck with the 5 speed manual transmission, and the owner has taken excellent care of it.
Do you think a truck this old, even with the low miles would be dependable?
I had an E-150 with the straight six that ran great.

Thanks.

"$1500, 97,000 actual miles, owner has taken excellent care of it"

Original owner? Take it for a 30-mile test drive. If it doesn't break down then it will probably last another 100k miles with only minor repairs and maintenance.

Look at it this way: $1500 is, what, four or five new truck monthly payments? Even if you had to spend $200/month in repairs (averaged out over a year) you'd still be ahead.
