2006 F-150 Cats
Please help, I have a 2006 Ford F-150 crew 5.4L with about 133k miles, not long ago both of my catalityc coverter got plugged the dealer was asking near $3,000 to replace them & 4 O2 sensors I just dont have the funds @ the moment, I gutted the cats but now my truck runs but it stalls @ every red lite & stop sign, I have purchased 4 O2 sensors cost me about $350 I dont yet have the money to purchase new cats, my question is can I run the truck for a few months w/out the cats but with new O2 sensors??? Thank you for your help

You can, but you are going to be throwing codes (P0420, P0430).
Don't spend money on factory cats. Get some Magnaflow 94106 or 94306 high-flow cats. You can get both for ~150. If you get the 94306, you may need an o2 extension harness so the shop can install them after the cats. The 94306 is 3" longer than the 94106 and supposedly a hair quieter. Then, take them to a muffler shop and have them install the new cats and weld a bung for the o2 sensors in the pipe, behind the cats. This will cost you another $100-150, depending on the shop. I just had this done yesterday and no more codes or restrictive Ford cats to deal with. |
x2 on getting aftermarket high flow cats for a fraction of the price the dealership wants. Better product in the long run anyway, and the muffler shop won't rape you to install them.

alfack, i have wanted to do this but mine seem fine so i have not brought myself to do it but did it change the exhaust tone much?
|
It damn sure did. It is a little louder than I like now, with the Corsa cat back. Oh well, I'm sure it will grow on me. At least it mellows out in OD.

New 02 sensors
I changed all 4 sensors on my 06 F-150 crew 5.4L but it still stalls @ every stop or red light, I have gutted the catalytic coverters cause there where bad, what could be causing the engine to stall? Do I have to adjust the idle? Thanks
|
If it is stalling when coming to a stop I would try cleaning the throttle body first.
Have you resolved the problem that cause the Cats to melt down? The Cats usualy fail from over fueling. |
Catco and Magnaflow make direct replacement asemblies for your truck. The Magnaflow have mandrel bent tubing but they are about $520/each for 2wd and $545 to $590/each for 4wd. Catco run less than $400/each. You do need to find the reason why they went bad though.

alot of the time a bad injector causes cat failure and the 5.4 has issues with that so maybe its loading the motor up and cutting it off at stops, do you see black smoke when you restart after it shuts down on its own?

Just took my 05 150 to the stealership to get some work done to the front end(ball joints and shocks). Told the service rep that the truck had been running like crap all winter and the CEL is on. They hooked it up to the machine and found my left side cat is clogged. Ford has an 8yr/80k warranty on the cats. I have 79670 miles on my truck. Dodged that bullet. They told me the part was about $1000.

06 F150 5.4L NO CATS
Start from the beggining, my mechanic who is not such a good mechanic gave my truck a tune up, but neither he nor me knew that you need a special tool to remove the spark plugs from this year truck, he broke on of them inside the head it took about a month to get the special tool to remove the spark plugs in the mean time I was driving it like that with one bad plug! after he replaced the plugs he said one of the coils was bad so he replace it, but since it has been running like crap, I dont know if a bad coil or bad injectors may cause the engine to run rich and foul the cats seems when I try to ask a mechanic at a stealership (dealer) they dont let them get on the phone. Thank you all for you help, if there is any more advise please reply I do appreciate the help..

Edge evolution for 06 F150 5.4L crew.
For any one out there who has used the Edge Evolution programmer, I read that it lets you adjust the idle? Can this programmer fool the computer whet there are no catalytic coverters??? Thanks, maybe I should have posted this in a different forum page. Sorry I am new thanks for all you advise.

it tells the computer what to do but it is still based on a 50 state laws so it will most likley still throw a code. if you run it with a bad plug you are asking for trouble due to you are washing the cylinder wall with fuel and no oil. is the plug fixed now?
