Help I D rear end
 

Hello, i bought what i was told was a 9" rear end complete less a yoke. The parts man told me i did not have a 9" rear, that it was a 9 1/16.I was told it came out of a 1970 f 100, which is ths right width to fit in my 1950 f1.The chunk has the 2 nuts that needs to be removed with a box end wrench and the hump on the back of the axle housing.The one thing that looks odd is there is a drain plug on the side of the 3rd member.Is there a way to tell for sure which rear end i really have.The pinion gear has a part # c6aw 4610 c on it, if this helps.I heard of 9" 9.5" 8.8" but not this one. This has a 15 tooth pinion and 42 on thr ring, if this is helpful. Thanks for your time and troubles.Ron

There was a 9 3/8" - similar to the 9". I've never heard of a 9.5 nor 9 1/16"

There were several variations of the 9" - large bearing, small bearing, drain plugs, no drain plugs, etc.

I am also needed some help from the number Guru's on my 9inch (Unknown year and model it came from), I am trying to avoid the 80 mile drive to my former employer where I can cross reference part numbers. I am trying to replace the axle seals and bearings but have not found a good online source to confirm parts inter change. I have BCA axle bearings 88128YYN but cant seem to cross them I found 88128-B bearings but have to order them locally, what do the letters at the end of the number mean? Im also trying to cross the axle seals ford PN D1AW-1177-C any Ideas?

The 9 inch on my 54 looks like a 1960-1967 but I've not measured the axle length.

Types Of Nine Inch Axle Housings
1967-1973 Mustang/Cougar - light duty, thinnest housing material, small axle bearings, 28 and 31 splines.
1957-1968 passenger car and 1/2 ton truck - medium duty, stronger than Mustang type, 28 and 31 splines.
Ranchero/Torino - heavy duty thick wall housing, 3.25 inch diameter axle tubes with flat tops.
1969-1977 Galaxies (coils), Lincolns (coils), and late pickups (leaf)- 3.25 inch diameter all the way to the backing plate, coil housings have upper control arm mount

How To Recognize Nine Inch Housing Centers
1957 - no dimples, flat center band up the center of the rear cover, bottom drain plug.
1958-1959 - two dimples on back of housing, flat center band, some had drain holes.
1960-1967 - two dimples, flat center band, oil level hole in back cover.
1963-1977 Lincoln, LTD, Thunderbirds had 9.375 inch centers, housings were cut away at the gasket surface for ring gear clearance, one curved rib at the front top portion of differential, strong but no gears.

Ron, it sounds like you need a different "parts man". Like said there are only a couple of different options and 9 1/16" aint one of them. Without a better description or pictures can't say for positive but it sounds like you have a 9". If it truly came out of a '70 F-100 then it would be a 9".

das54 the only problem I see with that website is where it stops. Ford used the 9" axle up thru 86 or 87. I have one in my 86 F150 4x4.

taz, pull a seal and bearing and take it to your local parts house, find an old guy who knows how to x-ref part numbers - not some kid who can only punch numbers in the computer. In fact the bearing should have the number stamped on the edge of the race.

I think your bearing is one of two - the big ball bearing setup or the smaller tapered roller bearing.

The reason why you're coming up with different bearing numbers is: When Ford updated the bearing part number, the Bearing Industry Number also changed.

C1SZ-1225-B .. Large 9" Axle Bearing / Bearing Industry numbers: 88128-B, -R or 208

In 1969, Ford replaced C1SZ-1225-B with C9AZ-1225-A, its Bearing Industry numbers are: 88128-FPP or F208-AKK

In 1978, Ford replaced C9AZ-1225-A with D8AZ-1225-B, its Bearing Industry part number is: 88128-YYN :-D

Bottom Line: All these bearings are essentially the same, one will work in place of another. Bearing Industry Numbers are what autoparts stores go by.

Note: If the race is separate from the bearing (it's not in this case), the number on the race will not be the same. Races have their own Bearing Industry Numbers.

The bearing & seal fit 9 inch: Misc 1957/73 and misc 1974/79 Passenger Cars * / 1957/83 F100 (except 1968/72's w/a 9 3/8" rear axle) * / 1969/87 Econoline / 1966/86 Bronco / 1975/86 F150.*

* Some 1974/79 Passenger Cars & F100/150's had a 9" that used an axle bearing/seal combination (D4AZ-1225-A). You do not want this part.

FoMoCo is in-famous for replacing (updating) 10's of 1000's of part numbers every :-X09 year! Keeping track of all these number changes was...and still is...a royal PITA!!
