Defective fuel injectors - replace 2 or all 8

After replacing my FICM and the 5 components with O-rings for the oil to the fuel injectors in November I noticed my '04 6.0 was running a little rough when first started a couple of weeks ago. It felt like the same issue I had prior to replacing the FICM so I took the truck to the dealer and they tell me that I have a mechanical problem with one injector on each side and they are quoting me a little over $2,000 to replace these two.

My truck has almost 290,000 kms on it and I believe these are the first injectors to be replaced. I have had the truck since 105,000 kms and have given it generous amounts of Power Service at each fueling - not to mention the many, many $$$ in repairs.

My thoughts are that at this mileage I should replace all 8 but to have the dealer do it brings the cost close to $5,000. So I am considering using injectors from another source that might also give me a little additional performance. I have had the EGR deleted on my truck, run the SCT tuner and have a MBRP 4" exhaust and after I had all this work done really started to enjoy the truck. I do not want to affect the longevity/reliability of my truck so I am not looking for huge power - especially since I do not have ARP studs installed yet. It has been suggested that I install injectors that would give me a little power boost and also install an AirDog system. I could replace all 8 injectors and have the AirDog installed for around $3,000.

Who makes and installs good fuel injectors for the 6.0 and do you recommend the AirDog system?

Unfortunately I do not have the knowledge to contribute much to this forum but I certainly appreciate and have benefited immensely from the contributors so any insight would be appreciated.

With your mileage I'd go right back with stock injectors from FORD. You can buy the 8 injectors for $220 each with a 12 month warranty and an air dog for about $700 +/- and have them installed at an independant shop for not much more.

Who are the injectors coming from? I know most if not all of the reputable injector dealers. This is NOT somewhere you want to go cheap.

do all 8 if 2 are going the rest aren't to far behind

id go with arp studs before you think about higher performance injectors. your asking to blow the heads off of it if you put them in before studs. but if you want a good company for injectors id say industrial injection. thats where im getting mine from down the road. i personally wouldnt go with rcd being all the bad stories ive heard and seen a buddy go through IMO and yes i would recommend the airdog II great thing to have!!!

Although I live in Canada I actually had the previous work done at RCD and so was considering their injectors but thanks for the warning.

My local dealer is quoting me around $383 per injector - where can I fin the ford ones for $220? The CDN$ is at or slightly above par so that is a great savings. I am very happy with the current performance so new factory injectors would be fine at this lower price.

I'll try the AirDog also I think. For a fairly stock truck like mine is the regular AirDog OK or should I go with the AirDog II?

One other question - I have been considering the ARP head studs. In fact I wanted to do them when the dealer had the heads off after my second EGR failure but because the work was being done under warranty they would not install non Ford parts. since the valve covers will be off anyway to change the injectors is it possible to install ARP studs without having to lift the cab off the truck?

Tousley Ford has them listed at $220 on their website. Since you're in Canada it might be cost prohibitive to ship back and forth (cores) though. Still.........it will be "new" Ford injectors in my truck when it's time.

I had two go bad last spring, replaced just those two and it ran like a top until it was wrecked this fall. When I rebuild I'll probably keep the injectors I currently have.

You may find them cheaper if you search for international injectors, vt365 is what international calls our engine.

I know that injector 2 4 5 and 8 are bad. How do I replace them myself? Is it hard or should I have someone else do it?

lhansman 04-28-2011 03:38 AM

Thanks for your responses all. I still have not bit the bullet to spend the money on replacing all of my injectors. I negotiated a much better package price with my dealer to do all eight but am still looking at close to $4,000 with taxes. I am within a couple of hours of Buffalo or Detroit so I may see if a US dealer can do the whole job at a better price.

Thanks again. As a first time Ford owner, this forum has been invaluable with diagnosing the many problems I have had with my 6.0 diesel.

Four thousand for a set of injectors is insane! It can easily be done in one day by someone with experience.

cartmanea 04-28-2011 10:28 AM

Dealer prices... 8 injectors runs about $2200 US, add a days labor (I don't know exact rates) and you're close to $3k US.

Guys seriously run some revx or hotshot secret thru it first. Dimes to donuts theyre probably sufferin from stiction. Why spend 2-3 k when you can spend 50 bucks? N if you have to buyem Tousely ford even if your in canada but be patient cause the border tards think everything is from japan and is radioactive. I waited a month for my order.

2,4,8 won't be bad,but 5 could be a pain.not hard if you're mechanically inclined.check the tech folder for some good info on it.
