Question about building a 428 motor
 
I recently got a 390 block bored out to be a 428. I got the 428 rods and scj pistons. Where do they stamp the crank identification numbers at? and if it is a 390 crank will it work out to be a 410? I'm planning on using edelbrock aluminum heads

I hope you had the block sonic checked. not very many 390 blocks can handle an .080" overbore. If you use a 390 crank, you'll have a 406. 410 and 428 crankshafts have the same dimensions so you'll end up with a 428 if you use one of them. The edelbrock heads are a great choice, you'll be happy with them. Make sure you have the rotating assembly balanced, you'll be glad you did. remember, the 3.98" stroke cranks use a weighted flywheel. Watch out for SCJ parts, they're pretty much irreplaceable, you'd be better off selling them and buying aftermarket stuff. You'll probably make money in the process.

Ditto on the sonic check. BBB posted a picture a while back for the crank casting numbers. I have it but its on another computer. 1U or 1UA and you have yourself a 428 crank. There might be another number for the 428 also but these are the most common. The SCJ and CJ pistons were the same. TRW makes some nice replacements if you decide to get new. The CJ rods use rod bolts and the SCJ rods use cap screws. You should be happy with the edel heads but have a machinist look them over and pay the 20 bucks to get them pressure tested. Getting them pressure tested is cheaper than the new gaskets if you have a leaky valve.

I went out to the garage to do a little checking and the on it match to a 390 crank. I got all this stuff for free from a good friend of mine the 428 pistons must have been in with a 390 crank. I know he took it out to replace with a 460 cause he is a big 460 fan I'm going to his house tonight to ask him some questions about it when he took it out.

Well you have a possible 406 going then. Are you going to run solid lifters or hydraulic. I would be happy to make some cam recommendations for ya. Which intake do you plan on using? I wish I had a friend that was giving away FE stuff. Those kinds of friends are ForEver.

I will probably use hydraulic lifters. I'm put this motor in a
f-250 that I'm restoring. It had a 360 in it and I want more power. I know I can get at least 450 hp out of a 390. It might cost but it can be done. I don't know what that comination is good for horsepower wise but I would think it would better.

You can get 450HP. The edel heads will do fine with a single pattern cam. The exhaust is not hurting for flow on them at all.
