Pic Request: Air Cleaner PCV Elbow
 

Does anyone have a picture of what the stock air cleaner PCV elbow looks like for the stock snorkel air cleaner for the 1980-1986 F150s? I am talking about the one that clips to the PCV filter on the side of the air cleaner, that then connects to a hose that attaches to the breather cap.

Now, does the open end shown in your picture connect to the little PCV breather located inside the air cleaner somehow?

And what is that round plastic ring on the open end for?

I'll take pics of the installed version later today to help explain; yes, the open end
connects exactly as you have explained and the small filter in the air cleaner assembly
fits, um, I think *into* that hole but I don't remember for certain, I'll hafta look.

The round plastic ring on the open end allows a metal clippy thing to hold the assembly
in place, and I guess there's a grommet installed someplace although I honestly don't
remember BUT I just found some stuff on rockauto:

Oddly enough, I couldn't find the filter itself; I was looking under a 1981 F350/6.6L but
Ford used this configuration at least since the 1970s and probably before, too. I used to
buy those filters at WalMart. Look around the rockauto or wherever sites, there are
different pieces in different sizes & slight variations but it's all pretty basic.

OK, here are some pix I just took:

Thank you for those pictures ctubutis, but that clearly isn't the same elbow that was shown in your first picture. And that is not the same air cleaner that our trucks came with either. The ones on our trucks have an oil cap in the driver's side valve cover that connects to the PCV breather filter inside the air cleaner on the driver's side.

And that is where I am lost. The first picture shows the elbow that my truck calls for, but it doesn't connect like the one in your second picture does.

You are correct on all counts...

The pic I posted yesterday is from a collection of stuff I have in my garage, today's pics are
of my own engine on which I have a 1970s air cleaner assembly because I like it better, it
reminds me of the 1970 Mustang I had as a kid. I used the hoses & elbows I did because I
have a wooden spacer between my intake manifold & 4V carb, this is FAR from a factory
configuration so I fabbed stuff up as needed.

In any event, this crankcase breather & PCV system is the same; it allows filtered air into
the top of the engine while blowby gasses are sucked out of the other side of the engine
through the PCV valve.

My connector broke so I ground down the filter housing on the inside and then cut out the hole bigger. I put the elbow in side that through the inside so it wouldn't pull out. But when it originally came the filter housing had a small little piece sticking out the side of the ac, you hook your elbow up to that and slide a connection lock type connector over that.

The PCV elbow shown in the first picture does not fit over the nipple on the PCV air filter located in the air cleaner.

That looks like the elbow that is inserted in the oil cap.

Now, where can I find the correct PCV elbow that connects to the PCV filter located in the air cleaner? :mad:

You don't specify your engine but I found that elbow for what would be my factory air
cleaner at rock auto:

Ford -> 1981 -> F350 -> 6.6L -> Emission -> PCV Valve / Crankcase Ventilation Connector

FWIW I have an 86 with an EFI 302. There is an elbow that connects from the breaker cap to the air box and at the bottom it connects to a tiny little air filter.

The PCV is on the passenger side and there is no line from it that runs to the airbox.

An EFI motor wouldn't use a round metal snorkel air cleaner like a carbureted engine would.

Thanks again, ctubutis. I bought that piece you listed from NAPA today and either end of that elbow will not fit over the little PCV filter located inside the air cleaner. I think that elbow is the one that is inserted into the stock oil breather PCV cap.

Correct, the PCV valve should lead to a manifold vacuum source. This is what sucks out
the blowby gases & fumes, the little filter allows filtered air into the engine to replace
those gases.
