Need a opinion for 59 F100

Sorry if this has been repeated through other threads but none narrow done to a 59 F100, I gonna put a 351w, it has the stock 9'' rear. I'm not really looking to tow or haul heavy stuff, weekend driver with some balls, no serious racing, just want some "ummph" when I hit the pedal. I'm in the market for a tranny, a simple C6 or C4, I've read the 4 is lighter and does not steal that much horse power to get it going, as for the 6 its heavier takes more horses to get her going..

My concern is the truck too heavy for the C4? Is it gonna last?
Am I better of with the C6 just for the fact its heavy duty and can withstand the weight and engine? Pros and cons of a truck with a c4 or c6?

Thanks!

with the price of gas ..why not go for the 4 speed overdrive auto trans?? from the differance in price you will be happier on the highway .it bolts up ..and you can find them everywhere...just wish I could put one behind my flatty..

Hmmm aod, would the AOD be as simple to install on the truck then a C4?

I agree with the 4speed auto suggestion. You'll be glad of it in the long run.

for your application and purpose a C4 or AOD would be the best choice.

the C6, while virtually a bullet proof trany, is big and heavy compared to a C4. the C4 in thier own right are fairly tough tranny's also. nothing wrong with them and they can be built pretty well indestructable. lots of drag racers use them (not stock of course) due to their light internals.

the AOD is a fairly straight forward swap. it is basically a C4 with an overdrive gear added. lots of info on the internet and this site about what is required to do the swap. the ones to look for are the AOD used in the early 90's trucks with carb engines. the only tricky thing is adapting and setting up the tv cable to operate the tranny properly. set up incorrectly, the tranny will probably last about 1/2 block. but there is lots of kits and adapters out there (check Lokar cables out) that sell the kits to do this correctly and easily. the main thing is getting the proper cable arm for whatever carb you are going to use.

Wow! Great Info Guys!!! Thanks for all the replys:-drink, It is gonna be a weekend driver with no long trips across the states. Transmissions scare me and of what ive heard the c4 is the easiest of the 2.....I might just stick with the C4...but my next question is which C4 is best?

What year should I look for?
