Fuel Pump Help
 

I tried the search and got nowhere, which suprises me. But I am in a bind...

Dealer quoted me $1100 to replace my leaking fuel pump (about a $200 part!) on 94.5 PSD. Is the thing really that hard to get to? If there are any pics or how to posts that you know of I would appreciate any help. I'm not afraid to tackle most projects...but if it is that much of a PITA I guess I'll have to bite the bullet :mad:

This write-up is for a Cali model, but not sure whether yours is a Cali or not. At any rate the Cali is more difficult to do than a standard 49 state truck. Not to bad a job. The only thing you need to be careful of is that the rod that operates the pump does not fall down inside the engine when you pull the pump.
Not a bad job at all. If you are of moderate mechanical ability you should be able to pull it off not problem. The only specialty tool you will need is an 1 1/4" wrench (or some have used a socket) to R&R the Banjo Bolt.

My uncle has a 97 and paid that much at the dealer. My friend who I got the truck off of did the pump and said it wasnt bad at all.

Well...I just read the bible on changing the pump, it doesn't sound like anything I want to tackle. I enjoy a good DIY but just no sure I have the time or patience to do this.

Does $1100 sound like a rip off? They say its an 8-hr job.

Yes, it does sound like a rip off... I can't imagine paying more than $400-600 to replace it. Pump is what... $150 these days? it's been a while since I did mine

Yeah - I don't have the money to drop $1100 on a truck I drive less than a 1k miles a year. I'm going to buy the pump and wait unitl it warms up and I have a free weekend to get all dirty and pissed off...which may be never

I did find a local truck company that would do it for $450...might let them have at it.

Can you all recommend whatever other parts I should buy for when I do the job? Appears the pumps come with new O-rings? What about any interconnect hoses and such?

FYI I'm in Indianapolis. And how do I know if my truck is a Cali or not....VIN code I assume?

Black hose, 1 required: F4TZ-9324-BA (KFL34)
Longer Blue hose, 1 required: F4TZ-9324-CA (KFL33)

Excellent....I think this makes it easier for me to provide the parts (as the truck co. suggested) and deal with $450 for the labor :-X22

I replaced the pump, fuel lines, cleaned and re-oringed the fuel bowl,, degreased the valley, and drank several beers in about 3 hours and for ~$125 or so. Seems like paying nearly 10x that is a rip off unless you're getting a hot tub, massage, and bottle of fine scotch for the entirety of their labor.

Yeah, you will definitely get the parts cheaper than they will. I also have some coupon codes for Advance Auto Parts if there is one near you. I got a Bosch fuel pump w/ lifetime warranty for $100.

The way I understand it these pumps are all made by the same manufacturer regardless of whose name is on it. They are made by Carter and therefore, the best price wins as far as I am concerned. Can someone who knows more about these correct me if I am mistaken?

As long as the massage is from some cute blonde or brunette and not the guy spinning wrenches :-D
