Tire frustration help!!!!!

Some of you have seen my new rims for the truck. they are 15 x 10 slots with a good offset. I am looking to put tires on them. To maintain the image of the truck [see avitar] I wanted a 15 x 29 x 12 inch tread.

All I can find in the size I want is either mickey thompson or hoosier tires but at over $250 each.

My other opion is a BFG 275 x x60 x15 tire at 28 tall and 10 inches of tread. I think it is going to lesson the visual with my truck but they are about half of the specialty tires....

Any ideas???

Do you plan to do burnouts? If so, then go for the cheaper tires!!

hellfirejim 02-14-2011 04:41 PM

it really isn't about the money [yes it does count] but more of the "look" I am trying to maintain.

Jim,

Here are two options for you that are close to what your requesting

I have a 275/60R15 on mine currently which is (HxW) 27.99"x10.83", but I might be going to 285/70R15 (HxW) which helps on my gears 30.71"x11.22"

Slightly different size, but consider going with an SUV tire. 30x950r15 or 31x1050r15 in a mild tread design might be an option. At least they'll be cheaper than the Mickey's. BTW, Micky Thompsons are currently made by Cooper, so most of the tires that Micky sells will be available in a Cooper line, also. Because of the 10" wide wheels, you've limited yourself as far as what will fit. The 31x1050r15 will be alittle bit of a stretch on that width wheel, but it will go. The 31" (actually 30.5 tall) height may be a tad tall, however.

I hate jacking with tires. Actually, I hate not having easy access to a tire machine...lol

late last year I needed 4 tires mounted and balanced, every shop close to me wanted just shy of $100. I even told one place that I didn't want the owner to do the work, just send one of the shop guys. I ended up dismounting and remounted the 4 tires in my driveway and then taking them and having them balanced.
I just got a set of tires for my truck and I started working on breaking the beads on my old slotted mags. Those tires have been on there for 25+ years and I was risking scratching up my rims so I guess I have to go beg and borrow some tire machine time form a buddy or something...ugh

Jim,

You could check with these guys, they're just outside of Chicago.

GEARWORKS MFG.COM CUSTOM WHEELS REPLICA WHEELS TIRES

I've never bought from them but they carry some older type tires.

275/60-15 can be found in BFG Radial TA or Goodyear Eagle GT II I don't remember who makes the 285 but I will check with a friend

I've heard that BFG still makes the 295/60/15 but not many stock it. Think it can still be ordered however.

Thanks for the link. As it works out they are about 10 minutes from the house. They don't have what I need.

I want to thank you all for your input. It seems that for the money I am going with the BFGs 275x60x15. It will give me about 10 inches of tread and a height of about 28 inches. A compromise but sometimes that's just the way it goes. My goal was to get a large tire but a regular tire that can be driven any where at anytime and is available easily.

Thanks again. When I get them and mounted I will post pictures in my build thread..
