1956 Ford F100 needs a rear end
 

Hi All,

Im new to the forum, just bought a 1956 big window, its got a 350 chev turbo 350 in it (Shocking) anyway, im going to yank that for a 460 and a c6 i think but in the meantime its still running the stock rear end. Doubt it would live long behind a big block so im looking for a rear end. Ive been told that a 67 f100 9 inch will bolt right in and measures the same for mounting. Direct bolt in. Is this true and if so are there any others i can do this with. My local wrecker has nothing like this and with only one year its tough to find any being parted out. Can i use other years. Is there any chance certain trucks had 31 spline posi units. That woudl be nice. Anyway, if anyone has done this swap i would appreciate the help.

Just bought a 9'' 1970 f100 rear end for a 56 f100 project and like you hope to have it easily installed in my project. Bill

sounds like what im after. Just trying to sort out splines, width and posi or not. Any advice?

i believe most of the f100 from late 60s early 70s are about the same. i have a late 60s in mine...28 spline non posi. The 28 spline is fine unless your making a HUGe torque monster and the non posi is also fine unless you want both rear wheels hooking up to pavement which I wish I had sometimes.

Yep, 57-72 pickup nine inch rears are close to a bolt-in. You may have to diddle with the shock mounts, U-bolts and driveshaft but the spring pads are in the same place and it's the same width...:)

I installed a Ford 9 inch rear out of 70 Ford Pickup in my 56 Panel. Used the axles out of two 77 LTD II (right side 28 spline 30 inches) so my bolt pattern is the same as my Volare front clip 5 by 4 1/2. I used the original spring mounts and adjusted the pinion angle at the transmission tail mount.

I rebuilt my 9" when I had plans to put a 460 in it. It has Strange 31 spline axles drilled for the Mustang 5x4.5 pattern, Detroit Tru-trac limited slip and Wilwood discs with integral parking brake. I figured as long as I was getting the tru-trac I might as well get the axles to match the bolt pattern for the front end and go with the 31 splines.

The unit itself is an oddball heavy duty 9" and according to number dummy was only used from 1965 to 1966 in the Police cars, Thunderbirds and Station wagons.

The wheels I found (with the back spacing for the Mustang, 10 inch wide with 7 inch backspacing) will fit just inside the fenders without rubbing. I will have to tub the bed though and I plan to use $32 trailer fenders inside the bed as opposed to the $150 wheel tubs.
