Sweet, :-jammin I got one in our shop last month and when i removed the filter from the white box i was rather surprised how large the filter is.:eek:

Most are now moding the MAF insert by removing it and making it a cool 100mm diameter which puts the restrictive point back on the 80mm throttle body. But dont remove insert unless its tuned. On the 5.0L mustang Airaid has an insert that slides in and out for tuned an untuned vehicles.

Yeah, the filter surprised me too! Figured a good way to show just how big it is was to have my daughter hold it! LOL

Did come across the JDM testing on the Raptor forums with the modified MAF housing. Trying to keep the mod madness a more under control this time... hey I actually left this vehicle stock for 3 weeks! LOL

Installed the new Airaid yesterday. First thing I noticed is it's a lot different working in the engine bay of the truck vs than the Mustang I had! I'm 5' 9" on a good day so a step ladder was a must! LOL

So here's some pics from the install... it was 13 degrees out so only took a few quick snapshots!

Only thing that was a bit of a hassle was plugging the MAF harness back in.. the MAF harness has a kind of big plastic L that was almost right up against the Airaid box:

Now the wire was not pinched against the box but was a little to close for comfort for me... So I snipped the zip tie that was holding the wires in the plastic L and was able to move the wire down out of the way...

Now my impressions and observations...

Installation: Very straight forward. Good instructions. There was one slight mistake. The instruction lists 2 button head bolts to attach the intake tube to the box when in fact the bolts were allen wrench heads. Not a big deal at all... just need to be aware you'll need an allen wrench not a socket wrench. (of course you already need a smaller allen wrench for installing the MAF). Took me about 90 minutes from the time I opened the box to the time closed the hood... that included time to snap pictures and move my step ladder!

Fit and finish: Overall, very nice. Looks great under the hood!

Data: Took it for a 30 mile drive last night. Long term fuel trims looked good. Fuel trims locked in at 0.0% to -1.6%. A lot of the time they were -0.8% with the occasional -2.3%.

Did a few WOT (wide open throttle) runs. The A/F looked good also, with the A/F staying about the same as the stock A/F. Nice thing about the new Fords... they come stock with wideband O2s!

Ok, so it was 13 degrees out so it was kind of hard to tell how much warm/hot air the Airaid will actually pull in. In theory it seals up against the hood... however you can see in the pictures that box has some gaps in it. Now all that being said, the intake air temps (IAT) were reading the same as the ambient (outside) temp... some times it would read 1 degree above ambient temp, however for the most part it was the same. This was while the truck was moving. I haven't done an idling test to see how quick the IATs will climb. But my first impression is the slight gaps in the box really don't let much hot engine bay air in. Will do further tests... especially this summer!

MPG.... ok.. to soon to tell, but my first impression here is my MPG is definitely better. How much, not sure... WILD guess would be 1 to maybe 2 MPG... Doesn't seem a lot but when you drive 30,000 miles a year it adds up!

Overall, very happy with my purchase! Oh, and one last thing, at WOT the truck definitely has more of a GROWL!!! And the engine bay looks sooooo much better!

What are you using to tell A/F ratios and IAT's ? I had an Edge in my 08 and could see all that stuff but not in the new truck.

Is this something to be done along with a tune or can you just do the intake kit?

@RZAR - Your welcome! I try to document all my mods (and experiments). Hmmmm... my website was v6john for my heavily modded V6 Mustang and V6 Camaro... guess I'll have to build a new one! Guessing V8John is taken but I'll have to check! ;)

@Radioactive - I have an MSD Dashhawk. Bought it back 2006 for my Mustang. Unfortunately MSD kind of gave up on it a few years back. I'm able to get quite a bit out of the new truck, like fuel trims, A/F (both commanded and actual), spark advance, IAT... One thing I can't see though is the knock sensors... There are a number of other ones I haven't tried yet...

@fz1dave - No tune required! Based on the numbers I was seeing looks like Airaid did a good job making sure the tube/MAF is calibrated correctly. Now if you do decide to get a tune, you can easily modify the the Airaid as fordmdb pointed out, and then get a custom tune for the larger opening. I think JDM was claiming like an extra 12RWHP on the Raptors by modifying the Airaid.

At WOT definitely seems like the truck has a much more aggressive GROWL! Truck just sounds meaner! :-D

Under acceleration I wouldn't mind the extra growl. I would just like to avoid an annoying drone while say... pulling the camper steadily at highway speeds. I'd still like to be able to hear the radio and have muted conversations without intrusive cabin noise. That would be a deal breaker.

Sure wish I could drive one first.

Only noticed the change in sound mainly at WOT... Otherwise it sounds pretty much like stock... sorry, won't be towing the 5ver until Spring...

I wont be doing this mod right away. I can wait 'til spring for your thoughts. Just don't forget to post back the verdict. :)
