Generator to alternator conversion...
Have any of you guys done a generator to alternator conversion on an early 60's f100? I am attempting it on my 63 and from what I can find I just need an alternator and a voltage regulator? is it that easy or am I missing something that is gonna leave me up the creek?
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the good advice I get from this forum!! |

I did the exact same conversion on my 1963 f100 4x4. Its very very easy to do. Just build the bracket as they instructed. Just take the positive cable that goes to the current voltage regulator (its the thickest wire, I believe it's yellow, it may have a black stripe i don't recall) and attach it to the stud that is on the alternator. There is absolutely no need what-so-ever for the old voltage regulator. Just take it off and throw it away.
Buy a Delco 10si 63 amp alternator. It has an internal regulator, so you do not need to buy a new regulator for it. It is literally as simple as connecting the positive wire to the alternator and jumping the #2 terminal to the positive stud on the alternator. I didn't worry about trying to hook up the GEN light in the dash, therefore rendering the #1 terminal useless. If you just build the bracket as shown on that web site, you will discover a significant flaw, and that is that it doesn't allow you to apply tension to the belt. I solved this by using the old belt tensioner. (its the long piece of metal that is about 8'' or so long that has is a long cut to allow you to adjust the position of the original generator) What I did was I took a piece of angle iron and bolted it to the bottom side of the front engine mount. (you will have to drill holes) and then bolted the old belt tensioner thing to the angle iron. This will allow you to bolt the new alternator to it. this is a thread i posted, it may be of some help. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...lternator.html If you want a picture of what I did, let me know and I will try to get one up. |
Hey 63', are you still willing to take a picture of your setup? Unfortunately it looks like the linked site for the alt swap is now defunct.

Summit Racing sells a 100a GM 1-wire in a Ford case.
I dont know anything about it, I just noticed it one day while surfing. I did the 3g, but the cost is about twice as the 1-wire. |
see photo 2 in my album for my alternator set up. The adjusting bar is from Speedway and was a direct bolt in. Part # 916-67915GS - $8

I got it fixed up nice already. Thanks you for the help. I hd to use a double v-groove from pully on the alt and it lined up perfect and has been running very well.
