1966 F100 Transmission Repair or Swap
 

I have a 1966 F100 with a FoMoCo C5AR 7006 C, 3 speed (no OD), column shift transmission in need of new bearings. I need to either replace the bearings or replace the transmission.
Is there a direct fit 3 or 4 speed floor shifter I can drop in that would only require a hole in the floor for the shifter?
Or, are parts available for the rebuild. I have not found any good sources for a rebuild kit.
Also, how hard is it to rebuild this tranny?

The old t18 granny-gear 4 speed is a bolt-in option. They should be easy to find in the wrecking yard (I've got 2 of them laying out in my yard). They are nearly bullet-proof, and should last for years.

Good grief, those 3 speeds are in everyone's shed. I know a guy who has one by me (Hershey, PA) he'd love to get rid of. The problem is they are not cost effective to ship.

I can't imagine they are difficult to rebuild. The MOTOR repair manual for that vintage does cover teardown of the trans. Other than a few things like the seals for the selector shafts not being readily available I had no trouble finding parts for mine at NAPA (new seals) when I did the clutch.

If your friends tranny is in reasonable condition, I'd be interested in helping him get rid of it.

I don't know where you are, but one of the guys on here told me he could rebuild a 3 speed for about $375. PM if you want more info.

Personally I have a love hate relationship with the 4 speed 3 speed argument. I like 3 on the tree because very few people can drive them, but another gear would help. Not to say many 4 speeds give you a higher top end.

The guy who offered is here in Denver. He said he would hot tank the case sharpen the gears and put new seals and bearings. Make it just like brand new. I would think you could find someone in SoCal who could do the same.

Bum, The 4 speed adds to the low end, all trannys that are not over or under drive have a 1 to 1 output ratio, 3, 4, 5, 6 doesn't matter. :-X0A6

It's the rear gear ratio that makes the difference.

Shipping to CA would cost more than the trans. I'm sure you can find one closer to home.

Truck fright on a tranny would probably be less then 75 bucks to Denver.

Im also the member that Broom is talking about that can rebuild these trannys. And I offer a 2 year Warranty with the full rebuild. For 375 to 400 depending on what it may or may not need.

I had front and rear dana 60's shipped cross country for $150.. I'm sure they could do the trans very cheap.

Not sure who's thinking about converting to what, but those 4 speed granny tranny trucks had a higher/taller hump.
