Transmission will not go into drive.
I was driving my 1998 Ford F150 the other day and pulled into a driveway. At that time, the transmission quit pulling like I put it in neutral. It shifts from park and goes into reverse but not drive. It has the 4.6L and is 2 wheel drive. Thanks.

Start with the obvious and check trans fluid level first. Next, do you have a check light on or overdrive light flashing? More info is better...

Welcome to the site! :)
The cable to the tranny may have been compromised. If you can place it in D, and nothing happens, I would start with the above post and then with someone in the truck FIRMLY holding the brake down, slide underneath it and manually move the shifter dog on the tranny (it's on the driver side). Do this with the engine OFF. If the gear selector on the column does not move, the cable is bad. I would also see what the tranny fluid smells like. If it smells burnt, its cooked. |
Transmission
Thank you for your comments on this. I have checked the cable and it is fine. Also the fluid is like new ( no burn smell or discoloring). I think it is a solenoid but I need a diagram of the transmission to confirm. I also found out it may be the safety neutral switch that will may not let it go into drive.

After it would not go in to drive, i backed it up and turned off engine, and truck would not start.
