Questions on a new to me '92 F150
OK so I picked up a 1992 F150 XLT supercab 4x4
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/5984/001ks.jpg It didnt come with an owners manual, and I tried checking for any info stickers on the Pillars ( drivers and passenger ), and looks like what was there has come off. Is there any other place to check on the truck for info on what I have? Motor is a 5.8 ltr. 351 Windsor What typeTransmission - ?? where else can I look? ( It's an Automatic ) rear end - ?? I ran the VIN decoder and it showed the following info... http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/9600/truckinfo.jpg I have never owned a 4x4 and now I forget how the guy I bought it from told me how to switch over to it... Is this the correct way? Lock front hubs, shift to Neutral, change from 2H to 4H or 4L and your set? What do you use 4H for? What do you use 4L for? I Will be getting Oil Changed. should I get tranny fluid changed as well, so I know its done? Anything else I should do? Thanks in advance. ROB |
There should be an decal on the drivers door pillar, decode the trans and axle codes here... Ford Axle Code Chart .: Articles
That would be a 351w engine, neither the 351C or 351M made it past 1980 and the cleveland was never installed in trucks anyway. Shifting in and out of 4Hi can be done on the fly, just lock the hubs and pull the lever or press the button when you need it. Shifting into 4Low must always be done with the vehicle stopped and the transmission in neutral. DO NOT drive on clear pavement with 4wd locked in or drivetrain damage will result, snow covered roads and offroad is OK. Note it is safe to drive straight forward on clear pavement in 4wd but turning is where problems start, the rear wheels turn a shorter radius than the front and that creates binding, so don't do it. The manual transfercase shift mechanisms always seize up and forcing them to move will usually break something, if yours doesn't move freely dismantle and lubricate it. |
Be sure to excersise the 4x4 monthly, lock in the hubs, no need to pull the shifter, just lock in the hubs and drive around a couple miles. This is to get everything turning in the front axle to lubricate the bearings, seals etc.
Check your tranny fluid while engine running and warmed up to operating temps* Check the level ofcourse and color, and smell it. If it is abit dark, smells burnt, flush it as soon as possible! Flush and filter! |
Thanks again for the replies!
I couldn't find a decal, it looks like there were a couple there but were removed or wore off. I am still searching through the threads and reading. |
Crawl under and look for a tag on the rear axle, should have the axle info on it.
Count the number of oil pan bolts on the trans. If 17 bolts you have a C6, if 20 bolts you have an E4OD. |
so the tag I found on the axle shows
S837B 3 55 88 1J10 There was some mud over the 3 and not sure if there was an L or not... will have to check later. 3 55 = 3.55 rear axle ratio 88= 8.8 ring gear 1J10 = 1991 October 10th |
that should mean that you have a limited slip also...you have a very similar truck to mine, only your looks in better shape then mine... good find and great purchase.. enjoy it
|
I crawled back under and there was an L after the 3 on the tag so it does have the limited slip as you said.
The oil pan had 20 bolts so, E4OD. Thanks again, I'm sure I will have more questions later on. |
keep the questions coming we all love to help the guys new to our trucks.

I guess ya learn something new every day. I didn't think they used LS rear ends in 4WD trucks because of binding issues.
BTW, I'm jealous. That's a nice looking t-ruck right thar! |
Nice, your truck has everything I wish mine had, 4wd 3.55 L/S. I'm jealous. I bet your A/C even works.:-D

I will be putting a walk around video up soon. a strange thing I noticed yesterday ... I was looking at the odometer while checking with the mile markers on the hwy. I was getting 1.8 miles between each mile marker. What would cause that? |
VIDEO ADDED.
Walk around of my truck.
any suggestions are welcome! video being worked on, not playing right at this time |
