Payload brake adjuster.
 

Who has removed their payload brake adjuster? I think I can use a 1990 rear hose and make a bracket to hold the upper hose in place.

Something is messed up with my brakes. I thought it was the MC, but it wasn't. With the new MC the brakes act exactly as before which is not real good. The brakes start to engage, then pressure releases a bit, the finally engage again. A second pump and I have good strong brakes. I thought the MC was bleeding past the seals, but I guess I was wrong. The rear shoes are tight as there should be. No leaks at the wheel cylinders. Most of the rear line in new. That only leaves the proportioning valve and the payload brake adjuster and air. I bled the system very well. I even unhooked the adjuster and moved it to the most open position during the bleeding. It is a $17.00 gamble to check.

Any thoughts?

I don't know, but I'm anxious to see what someone says because I have the same problem I've been fighting on my 88 Ford for 3 years trying to get some brakes.

Both of my 87's don't have the payload adjuster. Proportioning valve on the frame up front then hard line all the back to the rubber brake hose to the axle.

shouldnt be an issue to remove it. they replaced it with the rabs unit and most the guys here deleted that sucker too.

I've heard they go bad if they ever been turned all the way around.

Yes that is the part. The upper hose end is a banjo fitting, so just bypassing is not possible. I have to compare lengths, but I think the '90 rear hose will work, with a fabbed bracket bolted or welded to the old bracket.

Get a new rubber brake hose for non-proportioner like my trucks and install it bypassing it. In the end your steel lines will all go into the new brake hose eliminating the valve and old hose.

Yep! That looks like the part I looked up for a '90 F250. About $17.00.

Yes, that went away years ago on my 86.
And 86 was the last year they used them.

The first attempt at rear anti lock brakes.
If you were loaded, full pressure to the rear brakes.
If you were unloaded, it restricts the flow to the rear brakes.
Ride height was what determined loaded or empty, and that went out the window when I installed twelve leaf rear springs to replace the five leaf stock springs.

Dave you had a load sensitive proportioning valve on your F250 with stock 5 leafs before? Wow pretty useless. lol

At least my camper has it, with 12 leafs also. 9 mains and 3 overloads.

7 main leaves, 5 leaf over loads

2 tons just puts it on the over loads
4 tons put it about where 1 ton did in stock form
