6.2L MPG Question??
 

I have a 2011 F-250 Extended Cab 4X4 6.2L and the 4.30 rear end.

Curious what guys with similar trucks are getting for milage?? I am not one of these guys that thinks my 3/4 ton truck should get great milage.....but DAM! I have 5000 miles on her now, and an overall average of 11mpg? I dont drive crazy, and most driving is at 50-60 mph with the cruise on. Even on a longer trip, I cant seem to get better than 12mpg or so.

Like I said, I know its a big truck... but 11-12mpg under normal conditions? I thought it may get better with a few miles, but I now have just over 5k on it and no increase at all.

Yes, your mileage is a little low but I believe it's because of the 4.30's. They do make a difference in fuel mileage. I can get 15 to 16 mpgs on the highway running 70 -75 mph (empty bed and not towing) but I have 3.73's an only turning an average of 1750 rpms at those speeds.

How heavy is your foot? I'm not asking if you are abusing it but what I am talking about is the fun factor of the 6.2 growl when putting your foot into it also makes a difference.

mine. With just over 1000 miles, I did a 100 mile test with a good sized load.
I got 12 mpg and depressed(grin) and didn't bother to clock any more of the trip.
I am hoping that the mileage will improve some. oh yea, 3.73 gears...

I would say the 4.30 gears will account for the difference. In an old truck like mine, 3.55 gears gets you 18-19 mpg, and 4.10 gears gets 15-16 mpg (for the diesels anyway).

With the 6 speed, the 4.30's are not bad at cruising. I am at 1900rpm at 75mph, thats just above where my F150 was at with the 5.4l and 3.73's. At slower speeds, I think the higher gear actually helps mileage as you are not dogging the motor as much in any gear.

With a double overdrive trans, anything less than the 4.30's would be dissapointing to me. There is a big difference in "seat-of-the-pants" feel between 2 exact 11' superdutys, 1 with the 373 and the other with 430's....my brother has the identicle truck with the 3.73 gears. Feels like a different truck, and after a ride in mine, hes very dissapointed in his choice. Thing is, he is averaging about 13mpg over the same time span, so almost no difference between his and mine. I guess they just suck the gas alot worse than expected.

1900 rpms at 75 mph with 4.30's? I've read that guys that owned 4.30's were turning about 2100-2200 rpms at 75 mph. To me, that is the purpose of the 4.30's, to keep the engine running higher rpms which are closer to it's peak powerband. If its only running 1900 rpms at 75 mph its not going to display any more power when towing or hauling at highway speeds then my 3.73's until it downshifts.

Overall your brother is averaging 13 mpg and your overall is 11mpg (according to your OP). What is your brother averaging on the highway? You stated that you were averaging 12mpg on a highway trip.

Usually the higher gear ratio will get lower fuel mileage, it's pretty much a given. It's a little hard to believe that te 4.30 would get the same mileage in the same truck as the 3.73. I have a 3.73 on order, didn't see the need to go with 4.30 gearing since I won't be towing really heavy and I don't worry about drag racing off the start.

I know where your coming from, and I agree. I figured it would be a bit worse, and I didnt buy it for good gas milage, but overall, I though it would be better than 11-12mpg during regular driving in a model year 2011. Oh well, wouldnt drive anything else!

I dont have a 70mph freeway within 200 miles of my house, so everything is 50-60mph or slower around here, unless I travel. I tow a 10,000lb. boat in the summertime for my Charter fishing buisness and the F-150 wasnt liking towing that thing! I also snowplow over 300" of snow a year around here. The 4.30 was nessesary for me!

See your need for the 4.30, will be moving a lot closer to you shortly. Going from SE WI to Mercer for retirement.

I would like to know how you manage 15-16mpg on the highway at those speeds. I have a R/C and driving at 65mph I get about 13.5-14 max. The faster i go, the more it drops. At 75mph I am at 12.5 mpg. And this is with a tune in it as well. Now, granted, on the back roads I drive with my foot in it a lot, and I would expect low mileage then, but on the highway I would expect the 15mpgs others are getting.

Pulling four placed enclosed snowmobile trailer with 3 sleds at 80 mph I got 9mpg---2011 6.2 w/3.73

You are getting nearly identical mpg that my buddy gets out of his 11'.
He is always ahead of my 6.8 by 1-2 mpg per tank around town and nearly 3 on the highway. And we have figured this out many many times.

6.2L F250 Gas Mileage
 

I'm relieved to see that I'm not alone with concerns about the gas mileage. Truck: F250, 6.2L Gas, 3.73 Gears, 6 Speed Auto, Extended Cab, Lariat.

I have just over 5,000 miles on the truck now and have tracked every gallon of gas put in the tank. On a good day, driving down the interstate I get between 13.8 and 14.5 mpg with the cruise on. Most of the miles have been in western Kentucky with rolling hills or crossing southern Illinois which is pretty flat.

I did pull a 24 ft travel trailer to mid Iowa a month ago and the mileage for the 500 miles was 11.5 mpg (trailer weight was 4501#). What is going to be interesting is the mileage for our new trailer. This unit is a 5th wheel unit and weighs 8701#. The F250 has plenty of power, but with gas prices at $3.00 a gallon around here I do miss the 20 mpg I was getting with the 5.4L F150.

I have around 3800 miles on my 2011 6.2 with 3.73 gears my average mpg,s is 14.6;) not great but I new going into this purchase mpg,s were not going to be great:-X22
