Transmission for 1965 F100
I have a 1965 F100 352 FE engine with a three speed automatic transmission in it. I would like to change it to a 5 speed auto Transmission. Does anyone know what type of transmission would be best for this model truck?

None fit that engine, you will need an adapter (about $800.00) plus the tranny, could be a couple grand.
Is something like that in your budget? John :-X06 |
If I was you I would swap out that ole 352FE for a newer 302 or 351W with a T-5 or a 5 speed out of a F-150

What about the newer 390 engines. Do they have any 4 or 5 speed transmissions you could bolt up with out much modification. A friend of mine owns a machine shop and about 4 years ago someone dropped off a 390 FE engine to him to be rebuilt the guy never came back for the engine and he said he would give it to me if I wanted it.

As mentioned in a prior post, an adaptor will run you $800 to adapt a Ford AOD trans or a GM 700R. So....how much you want to spend? A 302/AOD swap might be cheaper than adapting an OD to your FE. |

What I am going to do is drop in a Gear Vendors O/D unit because I simply do not want to go with any other engine and want to keep my CJ Automatic. Pricey maybe but you would not be able to hurt it. Gear Vendors under/overdrive transmissions the most awarded auxiliary transmissions. just a thought that knowone else has mentioned |
2800+ is to rich for my blood! I'd rather have a 302 or 351 with a T-5....and yes I know T-5s are for cars but my truck will no longer haul anything but ass! :D

A T5 from a 86 and newer mustang with a S10 T5 shifter cone is what works in our trucks supposedly.
Since you already have the stick this is about as bolt in as you got. |

Since you already have the stick this is about as bolt in as you got. Either that or he could go to a built AOD. I had a T5 in my 96 ranger and as long as you drove like a grandma it was ok. Guy I sold it to blew the trans 3 times before finally replacing it. They were good for what 295 lb ft tq? |
I want to stay with the big block. And I don't want to put a car transmission in it I guess I am going with the adapter jowilker mentioned. Thanks for al the replys. I love this site. There is a lot of good information and experience here.

You can change out your rear end ratio for a lot less if you are trying to pick up a few mpgs.

The mustang T5's are a very weak trans. He has a Auto and wants to stick with an Auto. At least thats what his post says...

I have also raced T-5s in my mustangs for years! and yes while I have jacked up 2nd and 3rd gear before, they have never totally blown up on me! Even in my turbocharged mustang. ...I also didnt notice that the OP had a auto. :-banghead |
