7.3 wastegate problem
 

wondering if anyone has had a problem with wastegate leaking or dumping by itself or if it is another issue. My buddy has a 7.3 powerstroke dp tuner banks intake and exhaust. Tranny was just rebuilt after he recieved his truck back. It seemed to start blowing off really fast while under acceleration u could hear a leak and really would bad flutter after the hard shift! We where thinking waste gate the entire time so he order a banks big head yesterday! But if there is anything else he should know about i would appreciate it thanks!

Sounds like turbo surge which is not a wate gate issue, sound like the waste gate is doing what it's suposed to do. it will dump some boost early on to prevent over boosting. The only way to fix surge is to replace the wheel with a wicked wheel, but that doesn't alway's fix it, the whee in most case cost under a $100.00.

The for sure way to fix it is a lot more pricy in the $400.00 range and thats a ATS ported housing.

It's not the wastegate. In fact, it's impossible to hear the wastegate on these trucks.

As Rich pointed out, it's a compressor surge or stall issue. Surge happens on acceleration or when the engine is somewhat "loaded". You can really hear it with an open intake, and if you have a boost gauge, you can watch the needle bounce up and down rapidly. Stall happens on shifts, where you have higher RPM's, higher boost, then suddenly the RPM's drop, but you still have all this incoming airflow.

Hello, I am having a similar problem. When I am up to 70-75 mph and hit a hill or strong wind, I feel I loose power and hear my engine dieseling like my turbo dropped out? If I put my foot into it to pass, it does the same thing and then throws a code that someone on another forum interpreted as a waste-gate stuck open? I want reliable power on call every time. Do I need to upgrade the compressor side of the turbo like stated above. I thought a rebuild with wicked wheel and performance actuator. Now am I hearing I should think about a new compressor housing and more?

Surge doesn't throw a code.

And exactly what codes did pop up?

That's a wastegate steady state failure.

Here's the thing... the PCM can only see the wastegate solenoid, the electronic side of the wastegate. It cannot see what's happening with the actuator itself. So if you're getting a code for the wastegate, it has something to do with the solenoid or the wiring.

I throw this code only when passing and getting all the way into it. Also, I have 375,000 miles. Replace the solenoid? Do you have to pull the turbo to change the solenoid? Any advice?

The solenoid sits right on the very front of the intake spider.

However, before trying to spend money on swapping parts, what does your boost look like?

boost max is 16 psi, when there it will diesel, loose a lot of power and throw this code. At 2000 rmp, while working to get out of sand if 4wd, I show 3lbs.?

1997 Ford Super Duty waste gate
 

My waste gate is not working. When it warms up it does not not change sounds like it used to when it was working. It is stuck, What is the cheapest and best way to fix this. I use the truck for hauling, has always run great.
