.060 over in a 400

The machine shop called me today and said the block had to be bored over .060. I think this is too much. This kind of took the wind out of my sails as far as my rebuild is concerned. I was planning on a mild buildup with flat top pistons, Comp Cams with .484 intake lift .510 exhaust lift, edelbrock intake and carter carb. I was going for a reliable and durable build. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

If it's a CF or DIF cast block you'll probably be OK. If it's an MCC cast block you might be better off trying to find another one. Either way I think it'll be the last rebuild for that motor. IIRC both of shazam's strokers are built with blocks bored .060 over.

But both my block have hard block in them also ... Don't know if that would make a differants.

OK Well Hard Block is a Grout mixture that you pour into the block and you fill the water jackets up to the inlets of the water pump, Making then block stiffer and less tendency to twist and crack. The water jacket is then about only 2" deep, NOTE this is not for street driven engines either.. This is a Drag racing , Mud Booger Truck Pulling set-up where you Don't plan to run the engine for to long of a time.
My Motor get up to operating temp (180 Dreg.) pretty easy, and at the end of the Pull it's usually closer to 210 - 220 Dreg.
I have seen one guy bore a 400 to .080 over but I think your going to the outer limits there.

I would think that your machine shop must have sonic checked the block before boring it , So if they say it's good then I'd find some pistons and finish the rebuild.
I think I seen some 351c pistons that are .060 over from KB a while back . Or you can call J&E Pistons to see if they'd whip you up a set with the stock pin height and size for the 400.
Just remember to tell them a 400 has a deck Height of 10.297
the stock rod is 6.580 and they should come up with a comp. height of 1.687 for the pistons.

Bill Beyer Can you verifier these numbers for me .. the stock stuff isn't my best forte'. I'm more into the wild side.
