Dealer estimate, is this insane?
 

Dealer says that I need new rear brakes. The calipers are seizer, the rotors are cooked and the pads are shot according to them.

Estimate was 390.00 for calipers and 660.00 for rotors and pads.
With tax that brings the total to almost $1100!

Too much money.You can do this yourself and save hundreds.

That's the problem, I can't do it myself. Seems like OEM parts would cost me around $500.

if you supply the parts you can pick them up somewhere else,or take the truck to other shops you trust for more estimates, shop around, there is a tremendous mark up on parts.

Do you have a physical limitation to doing it yourself, or just a lack of confidence, or something else, Not picking on you, just trying to understand your situation.

I'm pretty much useless mechanically. I wouldn't want to mess this up.

You might be able to hit a meineke, or something and get a lot better price. Total price for a shop to do it shouldn't be over 600.

It's been a while but I'm thinking 75-100 per rotor, calipers I'm not sure about, I could see them being expensive, maybe 100 ea. then shoes about 50 bleeding the system, the whole job shouldnt take much more than a couple of hours.

<EDIT> I take that back, I just priced rear rotors for 50 ea at Oreilly. 40.00 for the Shoes. Rear caliper bracket is 14.00. It doesnt show me a price for the pins (says to call). Looks like a couple of hundred bucks in parts. I priced them for my truck, 04 4x4 with PSD.

I priced out the parts on Rock Auto to get an idea and it was around $500.

I'm going to try a local repair shop to hopefully save some money. I am also considering going with aftermarket parts if the money difference is decent.

I suggest going to a local parts store buying the Haynes or Chiltons manual along with the needed parts. Give yourself the whole weekend to do the job slow and correct. If you are able to fix stuff you can do your own brakes. After you do it once you will breeze through it the next time!!! Good luck and let us know how you did

I thought someone had a how to video around here somewhere on replacing the brakes. Your truck has disk brakes all the way around. Disk brakes are very simple, and easy to replace. Even a shop like Firestone is going to be cheaper then the dealer. I haven't seen your truck, but there is a chance you may only need new brake pads. The dealer is going to replace as much as he can get away with, because they are making more money. I would get more opinions, and go from there. Good luck.

Before I spent $1,100 on standard OEM parts, I would upgrade with nice aftermarket parts. I just had my front rotors and pads replaced with EBC rotors and Hawks pads. The rear rotors and pads are next. I paid $293.95 for the front rotors and $94.95 for the front pads. I paid $454.10 for the rear rotors (Damn!) and $82.95 for the rear pads.

if it is just rotors and pads you, never having done them before, should be done in 2 to 3 hours!!! its all plug and play man. It will take you longer to carefully open the brake grease pouch so it doesnt get all over you!!!

I did my front and rear rotors, pads, and two rear calipers for around $550. The autoparts store warrantied all the brake pads that I had previously put on which saved about $200. So I had to basically spend $750 in parts for 4 discs, pads, & calipers. Relatively simple install with some help, instructions, & determination.
