Adding Homelink

Does anyone know if its easy to add a homelink sunvisor to a truck? It's already a Lariat with the ultimate package, so I'm thinking it might just plug in somewhere??? I know some aftermarket companies make think but I would like to keep it factory as much as possible.

I have a Lariat Ultimate and it came with garage door opener in the visor. Did yours not come with one?

I'm looking at swapping mine for a 350, but it doesn't have the FX4 or the Homelink (its an option even with the ultimate package). I know I can order up skid plates, but wasn't sure on this one. A stupid thing to kill a deal, but I like having it.

Man, I love using it to. I use two on my house and one at the warehouse. Programming the Ford was easier than my wife's Mazda that uses Homelink. The Ford is a simple one-step and the Homelink was a painful 2 step process that required pressing and holding the existing transmitter within x-so-many inches from the Homelink opener. Pain in the rear.

Didn't know about that option but it sure is nice. Wish I had it.

I need to program mine.

I have seen these units on Ebay. They are just a stand-alone battery-powered unit - nothing to plug in. Someone on FTE had a write up on how they put one in their visor. I had a factory one in my Mountaineer & they are nice.

Dont Leave home without it.. Great little add on. Just wish I had 2 other places that I could use the other 2 buttons..

A little off your original topic, but whats your reasons for stepping down to the F350?

Oddly enough, when I bought my 2010 Milan Premier, this was not an available option. I had my 2 garage doors programmed & a garage door at the in-laws.

My factory Ford garage door opener was really easy to program, as was the one on my wife's 2005 explorer. The Homelink brand one in my 2007 Tundra refused to accept programming. So, I paid for an option on that truck that never worked. And of course there's nothing they can do about it under warranty since they won't come to your house to see the programming fail...

my point is to get the Ford one instead of the Homelink. I think you'll be much happier with it.

I think you can just order the factory visor with it in it. It just need power. They are a stand alone system. I have a Lariat ultimate package. It was a $125.00 on top of the package

I hope I can get the Homelink to work in the new truck. Have never been able to make it work on my wife's current Lincoln.

No problems with my Tahoe or her Continental, heck, even the opener built into my motorcycle works with no problem.

I like the Homelink idea because it eliminates a potential theft/crime of opportunity.

Break in and steal the garage door opener and check the registration insurance card for an address.

Thanks for the info, I love my truck overall, however don't like the two tone seats, bulky front fender flare on front from the wide track axle, and haven't been impressed with the 4.30 rears (mpg, shifting). Over all figured it might be cheaper (smarter) to get a 350 the way I want it then to start making all those modifications on this truck. Its 3000 to re-gear alone!

I'm looking to add a built in garage door opener to my Lariat. I have read elsewhere that Ford is no longer using Homelink but rather Car2U from lear. I've read that I can buy a new visor with the opener built in which will run about $200 for the one side. I've also read how folks have purchased a Homelink module off of eBay for $25 and installed this in their current visor. Couple of questions for folks...

1. For those that bought the factory visor and added on later, is the opener connected to switched power? I thought maybe they were connected into the vanity mirror lamp but those seem to be powered all the time. This would be a big issue for the opener as a thief would not need your keys to activate the unit. This is the reason I do not leave an opener in there now. My other cars have Homelink and they are connected to switched power.

2. If anyone has cut apart their visor and installed an eBay module, did the 2011 visor have a compartment for the Homelink like I've see elsewhere for Escape and F150 installs? Or is this compartment now gone since Ford switched to the Lear unit?

Worst case, if the factory unit is powered all the time, then maybe I can custom install an eBay module elsewhere in the truck and connect to switched power. Can't beat a $25 built in garage door opener.
