location of the fuel pump on a carb'd 87 460
Hi, Im in the middle of replacing my fuel pump on a 1987 ford econoline motorhome with the 460 carb'd motor. Where is it located? other people are saying look at he timing cover is on the front of the motor as you are facing it. If you look behind the large main pulley at the bottom front of the motor you'll see an oval shaped cover. That metal oval cover is the timing chain cover. I still cannot find it. Can anyone give me so tips? thanks!

It's in the tanks on my 87 F250
|
is your f250 Fuel injected though? I heard fuel injected ones are in the tanks, but the carb'd engines are bolted to the side of the engine
|
Carbed engines have mechanical fuel pumps. Not 100% sure, but I think the 460 has it on the driver side front of the engine.
|
I've got a carbed 1985 460 and a carbed 1987 460 both with electric pumps in the tanks. These are low pressure pumps. When the 460 went to injectors, the low pressure pumps in the tank were boosted by a high pressure pump located on the driver's side frame rail. The only fuel filter is screwed into the carb.

Ok so it seems to me that the fuel pump is inside the gas tank, I followed the fuel line all the way from the tank to the carb and there is no sign of a pump, The fuel filter is a drop in type located in the middle of the motorhome on the side of the frame rail. How hard is it to get at the fuel pump inside the gas tank?
|
You have to drop the tank to get to it. But the fuel in the tank is very heavy so you need to get it out first. You can then use a floor jack to lower it after you disconnect the wires and hoses.
If once the tank is on the ground it is not hard to change it. |
Ok So I drained the fuel and dropped the tank. Is this the fuel pump?

yes that would be your fuel pump and sending unit assembly.. the black thing on the end going left to right is the strainer.. and the silver cylindrical peice right above it that its attached to is the actual fuel pump
|
I replaced the fuel pump in the tank with a new one, When I turn the key over there is still no noise coming from the pump?? Is there anything else I can check?

have fun
the fuse and the fuel pump relay and where they are hidden is anybodys guess.
|
Ya Ive looked for those, Everywhere they are sopposed to be they are not
|
Well in 1987 they did not have a fuse only a fuse link coming off the battery side of the starter solenoid on the fender.

which battery is the relay behind? ( pass or drivers side) , this is on a ford E350 Cutaway I don't know if its any different that the F series trucks.
|
I would say drivers side if it is like the one in the photo above.
The photo is of a 1985 ford E350 Cutaway, I hope it is the same place. But I have also heard that some had it in the cab area on the firewall. Two tank setup: http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g9...83FuelElCT.gif / |
