I just noticed some thing regarding my oil changes.

I have been putting 3 gallons of oil in when I do my changes. Thats only 12 quarts. Does'nt the truck hold 15 quarts? I check the fluid level and it is good. Any ideas whats going on?

Thanks

If your putting 3 jugs of Motorcraft oil in, it come out to 15 quarts. They are not 1 gallon containers, they are 5 quarts.

I am using Retella T.

Does 12 quarts put you at the MAX mark on the dipstick?

Are you removing the oil filter before draining the oil pan? If not this can leave about 1 quart of dirty oil in the engine.

I subscribe to the philosophy of keeping the oil level about half way between MIN & MAX which requires about 13.5 quarts. The difference between the MIN & MAX marks is about 2 quarts so if I were to go to the MAX mark it would take about 14.5 quarts.

I remeber reading that there is about 3 qts. that stay in the valley for the hpop. system.. Someone will most likely correct me if I am wrong on this..But there is a good amount of oil that stays in the system..

If there is, I wonder if you can get it out very easy.

There might be around 18 quarts of oil installed in a new engine. The remaining oil after an oil change stays trapped in the lines, oil cooler, HPOP, etc. and will dilute with the new oil after a oil change.

There is no easy way to get that 'extra" 3-4 quarts out.

The oil system is 18 quarts, right?

I let mine sit overnight and I am able to put in 14.7-15 Q to get to max on the dip stick.

The 18 quart quote would be when the factory initially filled it for the 1st. time. Now after each oil change approx. 15 quarts would be required as per Ford capacity chart to bring it up to full. The remaining oil (3 qt.) of old oil from the previous change will mix with your new oil, there's no easy way avoid it. Some people including myself use a 15W-40 in the summer then switch to 5W-40 synthetic for colder seasons are actually diluting the synthetic by 20% with the old 15W-40

You may want to check your dip stick for damage or full engagement. I had to replace mine. Bruce

On mine I fill it back with 13.5 quarts, then I read it after running the engine and letting it sit 20 minutes and it's always in the middle of the hash marks.
