tear down started

finally got the 78 in the garage yestarday after some choice words, been sitting near a month and no interest in starting.but the brother in law and I finally got it fired up and the snow of it an inside.
got a hour or so in on it last night with the tear down, some trim and lights of,long road ahead though I can see.
I have to get the approns and rad support out here soon to get them powder coated and ready for reassembly.should be a fun filled winter, sure wish my garage was bigger ahaha but then don't we all.

96sherm 12-22-2008 06:30 PM

no matter how big the shop its always too small. be sure to keep track of your progress with pics and post them for us!!

Fomoko1 12-22-2008 09:05 PM

Now the fun begins.......
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

northeaster79 12-23-2008 02:22 PM

yes I will get some picture as soon as I get some work done hahaha.I scored a good source of heat yestarday,so that will speed the process up.
can't get much work done when the beer is freezing faster then you can work and drink.my old heater was just about done,I got a 165000 btu blast heater that makes nice heat.

Fomoko1 12-23-2008 05:37 PM

That will make it alot nicer, the cold slows me down too, it`s - 30 here most days lately. I can warm my shop fairly qickly but the tools and parts take alot longer.

northeaster79 12-24-2008 06:17 AM

I had the heater going last night for half an hour or so and it was t-shirt working conditions, just too busy these last few days to get much done.

96sherm 12-24-2008 06:22 AM

once my current garage is my shop, hopefully by next fall, i'll be putting heat in there and it'll be home to a project of some kind. i remember working on my '83 without heat in the garage. was nice because hitting your fingers didn't hurt until a couple hours later.

what are your plans with this truck Fred?

northeaster79 12-24-2008 06:30 AM

I spent many years working in an old barn with no door and no heat, sure made things move slowly.
its going to be kind of a show truck sherm, but I will drive it a fair bit in the summer months, just something nice with decent power to cruise in.

Glenn Graham 12-26-2008 03:27 PM

where do you get your powdercoating done?i painted my inner fenders body color(red)and my rad support semi black.looks great.i'd post pictures if i knew how.

northeaster79 12-29-2008 06:41 AM

a friend of a friend works in a shop where they do it,he's allowed to do his own stuff so I just send him the pieces and get them back all done.I did manage to get a little work done durring the holidays, all the trim and lights are off, front bumper and grill, after gettin the 15 bolts and 6 screws out of the grill I realized you need the bumper off too, wish I had of known that before I battled with the three bolts behind it.

Fomoko1 12-29-2008 04:31 PM

It`s great to have friends like that, helps out alot.
I`m waiting for some warmer weather to get back out to my shop, we`re in the -30`s again.

96sherm 12-29-2008 06:50 PM

the break comes next week Fom... -9 for saturday here, then next week i see -7, -12, stuff like that. hopefully our cold snaps are done for the year then... :D

Fomoko1 12-29-2008 07:20 PM

I`ve heard that before and I`ll believe in it when I see it though I do wish it would happen soon.

northeaster79 12-30-2008 06:21 AM

yes its helps out alot having friends like that, our cold snap is here and probably will stay until the end of febuary,I heard about this global warming but I'd sure like to try it out for myself.

Fomoko1 12-30-2008 11:39 AM

No global warming here, the rest of the week is in the mid to low -20`s and looks like we`re in for another cold winter.

northeaster79 12-30-2008 12:04 PM

we have snow forcasted for the next few days, which has its good and bad points, not a huge fan of winter but my father and I are getting into the plowing and such on the side so it will be good for that.global warming is just a farce anyhow.just another gimmick to keep some peoples mind of the real problems the world has.

Fomoko1 12-30-2008 05:30 PM

I used to do commercial snow removal as part of my Bobcat business but here it has a habit of snowing and then dropping down to -30 or 40 overnite. Now I just do my own farm driveway, yard and some of my neighbours.
As far as global warming goes while I don`t entirely discount it, it doesn`t seem to make our winters any darn warmer.
I think it`s something that we won`t know about in our lifetime.

northeaster79 12-31-2008 07:32 AM

we finished up the deck for the spreader last night,so the shes all ready for the storm we are getting overnight.as far as global warming, they have proof that the earth was a tropical jungle once, and then the ice age,I think its just part of the natural cycle.but then again who knows
I'm just a hired wrench,not a scientist.

Fomoko1 12-31-2008 02:42 PM

Scientists can be scary people with their different theories, some of it is more than I really want to know..........LOL!
So far we haven`t had the storm we`re supposed to get but it maybe on the way for later, no snow but the wind is starting to come up.

northeaster79 01-05-2009 10:02 AM

I think if some of them scientist knew half as much as they think they do,they would get more done.got alot of work done on the truck yestarday, fenders and hood off, headlight buckets out, headlight wiring out.rad is ready to come out.hopefully tomorrow night I'll get an hour or so on it and get the aprons and rad support out and off to buddy for coating.there is no fear of any of the front clip falling of these trucks,I think theres over 60 5/16 ths bolts in my bin so far.

northeaster79 01-12-2009 10:28 AM

I finished getting the front clip off this weekend.I had already had everything except the rad support off,I took all the small pieces and sandblasted and primed and painted them friday afternoon, and I dropped the rad support and aprons of to the guy for coating.now all I have to do is wait I guess.

Fomoko1 01-12-2009 10:51 AM

Powder coating? Cost for the rad support and aprons?

northeaster79 01-12-2009 11:59 AM

the grand total of free.firend of a friend works in a place that powder coats what they build and he is allowed to do anything he wants when they are already in the process of doing it.I already got some stuff done and it looks good.

Fomoko1 01-12-2009 12:10 PM

Can`t beat free....

northeaster79 01-14-2009 07:48 AM

well I found out last night he can't do the rad support because its to long.the machine they have is automated.the parts go on a conveyer of sorts and then turn into the oven.so I guess I'll be breaking out the sandblaster for that.I may just do it all but my other two wheels.hows the weather up your way morris?its nasty here, got alot of rain last night and this morning, now its turning to snow and going to get cold again, should make for a nice mess.

Fomoko1 01-14-2009 12:05 PM

Bummer on the rad support. Don`t you have to sandblaster everything real well before taking it in for powder coating or does your friend do it for you when you take it in for powder coating?
We`re into a cold spell -30 right now after getting some more snow, while it`s supposed to warm up by Friday we had that forecast before-it didn`t happen.
Today -26 & -30 tonite, Thursday hi -16, Friday -3, Saturday plus 1.
Sunday a low of -4 & high plus 3.
Freezing rain bites.......

northeaster79 01-14-2009 12:52 PM

yes he sandblasts everything before he does it.no difference I have a blaster,I just thought since the powder coating was so tough,it would work well on those parts.I still may give him the aprons.hard to say I was only going to sandblast my battery tray and ended up doing all the small parts on the front clip.now those are some cold temperatures,we haven't got anythig like that yet, coldest we had yet was -21,which is plenty cold enough for me.

Fomoko1 01-14-2009 01:20 PM

I expect we`ll have plenty of minus temps before this winter is over, seems it`s going to be a cold one.........

northeaster79 01-15-2009 06:41 AM

well its only-19 here but -38 with the windchill so its fairly frosty,I'm just on my way out to spend a couple hours out in the cold now.gotta love winter.

Fomoko1 01-15-2009 06:15 PM

We`re going the other way, its -15 here now and all the way up to +4 on the weekend...hopefully.
But with a risk of freezing rain overnight!:-hair
Thursday nite-snow ending this evening, risk of freezing rain, possible 2 cm. minus 9 by morning. Friday-high of zero.
Friday Night...minus 8. Saturday...Sunny. High minus 1. Sunday...sunny, low minus 5 hi of plus 4. Monday...sunny- low-2, hi 0. :9

northeaster79 01-16-2009 02:22 PM

we had the cold last night, let me tell you does that play hell with the trucks, air brakes are great as long as it never goes below -10.and tonight its going to be worse, sunday afternnon its sposed to warm up some.I'll believe it when I see it.

Fomoko1 01-16-2009 06:16 PM

We`re doing good here now, finally after almost a month of big minus temps we`ve high the plus side. It feels like it`s almost time for the sun screen.........

Fomoko1 01-21-2009 07:55 PM

It`s going to get colder now for a few days then the temps are supposed to moderate to near freezing.
We replaced my 90 Ranger broken rear springs, that went well but when changing the thermostat one of the three housing bolts broke. That took an hour to get the broken piece out as there is not much room to work on it. Hopefully I`ll get some better heat now.

northeaster79 01-23-2009 01:29 PM

that takes the fun out of any job,but thats what happens when you have steel bolts in an aluminum hole.I think I'll be putting lots of never siez on everything when I put my new aluminum intake on the 302.

Fomoko1 01-23-2009 05:35 PM

I wish Ford had used $.05 worth of Never Seize, it would have saved alot of headaches.......:-X16
Makes you wonder why manufactures would not take this simple but very effect step!

northeaster79 01-26-2009 07:33 AM

ford and freightline both should use a drop or two.its back in the minus 20's here again today, come on spring.got the engine pulled out of the old ford saturday, now comes the task of cleaning 30 years worth of grease and oil of the frame and firewall and get it all ready to paint.

Fomoko1 01-26-2009 02:05 PM

The same here, it`s near -30 but with a warming trend forecast for tomorrow on. If this happens then I will be able to work in my shop, it`s heated but not overly air tight so if it`s real cold I don`t try to heat it.

northeaster79 01-26-2009 02:49 PM

same here,I went out yestarday to start the clean up and had the heat on for about 20 minutes,it was starting to get warmish but I figured I'd go back inside where it was warm.I picked up a few cans of gunk engine degreaser today, but its minus 20 here still so it will probably be a few days yet before I get that mess cleaned.I have to get some of the wiring out and the steering box, motor mounts etc. before I paint the frame.and I think I'll take the doors of when I do the firewall, and do the door jambs and inside the doors at the same time.

Fomoko1 01-26-2009 03:15 PM

It doesn`t take more than half an hour or so to heat the shop but the tools and everything else is too cold..........
It`s alot nicer working in the shop when it`s in the - teens or warmer.
