New guy saying hi
Hello all, thought i'd intoduce myself. My name is Chris and had a 1966 F250 back in high school (1985ish). My brother bought it and I bought it from him. I am in the market for another one. Not necessarily a 250, I don't really care which motor, a 6 cylinder will do just fine. All I really want is the 4 speed with the granny first. Mine had the round speedo but I see some with a rectangular and was wondering what the difference was. Is there anything I should be looking for or shying away from? I'm not really looking for a project, I did front cab mounts on mine, got them from JC Whitney all those years ago...lol Any help would be appreciated...

Welcome to FTE and the Slicks forum Chris. Where are you located, there are some very solid trucks out in the desert.
The Custom Cabs had the sweep speedo while the others were round. :) John :-X06 |
Hey John, I'm in Danbury CT, a bit far from the desert..lol Thanks for answering my speedo question. Every little bit helps. I've been lurking for sometime. I just sold my 66 VW camper and now have some funds to relive my high school days, except with a lot less hair. :) I know I'll have more questions, thanks again for the reply.

Chris, With the cost of things where they are now dragging one back from the left coast can add moving cost but have less total invested in the end.
Take your time look hard, jumping on the first thing that moves can eat your lunch. John :-X06 |

I know that's not what your looking for. Welcome Chris. Sometimes you can find what you're looking for browsing craigslist. Depends on what $$ amount you want to spend. Might have to travel South towards Creedmoor . I found a nice one a couple of years ago in Martinsville, VA for $4000. Ready to go. Friend was doing a 66 at the time, he said he had over $6000 invested and wasn't near being done. |
Chris, Welcome to the Family of Ford Truck Enthusiast! :-wink Agree with comments by other members, take your time and should be able to find what you are looking for at a reasonable price. Check Craigs list; may want to consider setting up an Ebay email notice and receive daily listings; for example, Ford pickups, and parts as seller's post them. There's also the FTE classified. Anyhow, food for thought? http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...otos/hmmm1.gif Again, welcome to FTE, looking foreward to your input>
|
I agree with others - take your time and you should be able to score a pretty sweet truck for the money. I wish I had waited and looked for one done but now that I'm into it I will stick to it to finish it. I've seen several really nice F100's in this area selling between 3,000 and 8,000.
|
Hey guys, thanks for all the info. I've been looking on craigslist and ebay. I found a couple of leads. Definetely not jumping on the first truck I find. I've seen that rat rod one, I'm tempted to go look at it because its right in my back yard..lol Thanks again, I'll keep you posted if I find anything worthwhile.

I guess this is whats called a teaser. I struck a deal for a 66 F250, 4WD, 390 with the 4spd with 4.56s. I don't have any pics as of yet. It will be delivered sometime next week. I'm curious to think what you guys think its worth.
I have a few questions and I tried using the search function, is there a way to just search this forum? Everything I get is site wide. The truck has no outside mirrors. I read the thread but wanted some opinions. I like the jr west coast mirrors and found a set here.. Junior West Coast Mirror - Cham-Cal Engineering | AW Direct I was wondering if anyone else has used these or something similar, and what they thought of them. The truck is far from original and not "correct" but it is solid. I'll get some pics straight off the flatbed. :) |
I too am new to this site. Living in AZ clean rust free truck are everywhere especially if you don't mind buying a long bed. Short bed are another story but are out here. My good friend picked up a SUPER straight 64 SB with a 6 and 3 speed for $1000 and it had no rust.
|
Thanks AZ, going from his pics the truck appears to be "rust free". The previous owner took care of most of the body work. I'll know more next week when it arrives.
BTW, I figured out the search function...:-newbie duh... |

On sale day, 352's magically become 390's. 390's were never offered for 4WD's. 1965/67 F100/250 4WD: 352 2V / 1968/76 F100/250 4WD: 360 2V Measure the stroke to determine engine size: 352/360: 3.50" / 390: 3.78" Don't buy mirrors until you see what's available. The type you linked to is very similar to what Ford offered for 1965/72 F100/350's. Ad says 1 ton, but that's BS. Go to the 1st page of this forum, see post 19 in the "side mirror" sticky, look at the 2nd parts catalog pic. Not shown: Chrome mirror w/a 5" round head that fits in the door slots, reproduced. |

Hey Bill, I talked to the owner and he said he pulled the 352 out and put a 390 in. Have to take him for his word right now. I'm guessing there will be a number on the block that I will be able to tell for sure?
I saw LMC? had the repop round mirror that fits in the slot. I'm not to up on them for some reason. I also saw they sell the rubber piece that fits in the slot if you don't use that mirror. I'm really leaning towards those west coast jobbers right now. I haven't bought anything yet, still waiting on the truck. I might buy one of those "peep" mirrors untill I make up my mind. Thanks for the reply. Thanks John, I stumbled across it...:) Hey Bill, saw these on eBay, ad says 67-72 but they look similar.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Truck-F...821042&vxp=mtr |

That "352" in the casting can be confusing. We ran across that when buying a 67 Galaxie, guy advertised it as a 390. Called back and said he saw the 352 cast in the block and said he didn't want to give us wrong info. Just the opposite of the usual when all 352's turn into 390's on sale day.

Once again Bill, thanks for all the info. I'll post up some pics later this week when it arrives.

You will find the original color on the door warranty tag. Once you have the truck post the full info. Garbz |

I got the VIN: F26YE862105 ~ F26 = F250 4WD / Y = 352, 2V, 208, 4400 :-huh / E = Mahwah NJ Assembly Plant / 862105 = 1966, assembled May 1966 / Nothing in the VIN for original color?? :-huh No VIN of any FoMoCo vehicle of any year contains the color code. COLOR code listed separately on the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch. 1965/67 F100/350 w/a 352 (all 2V): You will see the following stamped on the 3rd line of the Warranty Plate: CERT. net HP 172 / RPM 4000 The only place on the truck where the 208 (gross) HP is listed, is on the oil bath air cleaner's decal (reproduced). |
I found all the vin info here.. Didgey Specs 61-66
Unfortunately the warranty plate is gone. Somewhere along the line the door was replaced and the plate is gone. A friend told me I could get a replacement but did not know how to go about it. Bill, I must say I am in awe at your vast knowledge of anything and everything associated with these trucks! Thanks for posting! Hopefully I will post pics monday night.... Edit....found this.. http://www.martiauto.com/tags.cfm Anybody use them?? |

:-X09 The worst CRAP foisted on mankind! Specs have gazillions of errors and omissions. The two clucks that wrote these specs originally got them off vehicles they found in junkyards, car swap meets and car shows. Had no Ford parts catalogs, zero Ford parts experience. Everytime someone posts this link on FTE, it makes me wanna :-X13 Unfortunately the warranty plate is gone. Somewhere along the line the door was replaced and the plate is gone. A friend told me I could get a replacement :-huh but did not know how to go about it. Impossible, FoMoCo THREW AWAY all the records decades ago. Edit....found this.. Marti Auto Works - Replacement Door Tags plus more Anybody use them?? Marti has no records for anything prior to 1967. Sorry, you're in the same boat as the rest of us, up the proverbial creek without a paddle. All that's available for 1961/66's is the scant production figures that were kept for the entire auto industry by R. L. Polk & Co. |
Sorry for makin' ya puke Bill...lol
Bummer about the plate, it would've been nice. |
Ok, more drama. Truck was supposed to be delivered again today. Got a call from my carrier, CT DOT stopped him at the MA/CT state line. He was over his hours, etc. Had to sit there untill 8pm tonite. We'll try again tomorrow.... Here are a couple of pics the PO took when they loaded it up...

Guess my link didn't work. Truck finally got here last tuesday. My shipper drove it off the trailer and it hasn't started since. :-huh Shipper hooked up his semi to it and we pull started it. I drove it a couple of hundred yards and now I think I'm chasing a bad ground, starter solenoid just clicks like crazy. I replaced the solenoid and starter already. I bought a new battery and all new cables. Tomorrow before work I'll put them in. Here are a couple pics, note front lift blocks which will be taken out, although, I love the way the front looks....

Finally got the truck started, turned out to be bad battery cables. I haven't had time to mess with it since. I'm on vacation next week so I'm going to get tags for it and remove the lift blocks. I won a set of 67-72 western style mirrors of off eBay and I ordered up an add a leaf just for the front for now. I don't like the looks of the tires so I'm going to max out my card and go for some 35 in BFG ATs. I just love spending money I don't have! :-X04

Styleside bed is incorrect, it's supposed to be the 1957/60 bed. Only 1961/66 4WD with this 1964/66 F100/250 2WD bed: 1966 F100 4WD.
The area behind the grille and FORD letters is supposed to be painted black, not body color. Bumper guards intro'd in 1969 as an accessory. Will fit all 1964/77 F100/350's as all use the same bumpers. Bed rails appear to be factory, but were first intro'd in 1968, same thru 1991. Custom Cabs have an anodized aluminum grille, stainless steel windshield reveal mouldings. Missing: Door trim panels and surround mouldings, R/L armrests, Custom Cab nameplates on the doors. The BODY code defines a Custom Cab, is stamped on the Warranty Plate. Wrong front fender emblem, it's a hood side emblem for a 1963/64 F250 / 1966: FORD above, F250 below encompassed within emblem. Plastic center emblem, red background, with silver FOUR WHEEL DRIVE Reproduced by Carolina Classics. |
The truck is far from correct, that much I know. I thought the bed was wrong. I would like to replace it as it is just littered with bondo.
I didn't think it was a custom cab because of the round speedo? Warranty plate is missing. Somewhere along the line they replaced the drivers door and didn't keep the plate. I'm just glad it runs now. Time for an oil change and tune up. Since I don't really know if this is a 390, are the spark plugs, wires etc.. the same as a 352? Thanks for the tip on the fender emblem, they are falling off anyway... You're the man Bill.... :-X06 |
Custom Cab, round speedo, chrome steel instrument cluster bezel: 1961/64 F100/1100 / 1965/66 F100/250 4WD / 1965/66 F350/1100.
Custom Cab, sweep (rectangular) speedo, chrome plastic instrument cluster bezel: 1965/66 F100/250 2WD. Same points/condenser/rotor/dizzy cap: 1958/73 ALL V8's, 1974/75 all V8's w/o DuraSpark. Points exception: Dual point dizzys use two I-6 points. 352/360/390 plug wires same-o same-o. Steel core or radio resistant. Valve covers have a bracket in the center: B8Q-12297-A plastic four plug wire divider nestles into bracket. Good news: 1966/69 Warranty Plate same, available from martiauto.com along with the special rivets used to attach it. Marti will stamp the VIN, all the original codes on it. Bad news: Marti has 1967/79 records only, no 1966 or earlier records, so you will have to provide the VIN and codes. There's another thread inre to 1966: "Warranty Plate information backfill." Take a look-see at what the OP and I came up with. |

George, where in NY are ya?? Not a bad looking truck to start with. I run across some beds when I go to Virginia. |
Again Bill, many thanks for your time.
George, my fiancee lives in Poughkeepsie and her son goes to Plattsburgh. The truck looks much better in pics. A LOT of filler, I kinda compare it to 5000lbs of play doh sculpted to look like a truck...lol I'm playing hookey from work tomorrow and I'm going to drive it back to my place (30 miles) so I can tinker with it. Say a prayer..... |
Best of luck with your trip. My sister lives in Millbrook (E of Poughkeepsie) so I get over that way once in a while.
|
Well, made it back to my place. The truck ran great, but what a handful it was to drive. Steering was way sloppy. I'm hoping his homemade lift blocks have something to do with it. I haven't gotten underneath it yet to poke around. I'm just glad I made it... :)
Are these the correct fender badge? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1965-19...1b15eb&vxp=mtr I'm guessing the 4 wheel drive emblem fits in the center? |

The FOUR WHEEL DRIVE plastic insert is reproduced by Carolina Classics as is the complete FOUR WHEEL DRIVE emblem (Carolina's 2008 paper catalog price: $75.00 each). Originally the 1966 fender emblems came with specific inserts (RANGER, TWIN-I-BEAM, FOUR WHEEL DRIVE, CAMPER SPECIAL). Ford did not sell these inserts by themselves. The problem is, these inserts are retained in place by tiny tabs that have to bent outwards to install the insert, then bent back into place to retain them. Since the tabs were not made to be bent, don't be surprised if they snap off. 800-598-4211 ~ carolinaclassics.com |
I only see the insert on Carolina's web site. $28 for the pair. I'll give them a call on monday to see if they still repop the whole emblem. Don't know if I want to spend upwards of $150 for the emblems, but at least I know what to look for now. Thanks!!

Yes the tabs will break off. These are made of what I call pot metal. If the tabs do break off just grind or cut off what is left of them. Insert your emblems into the opening where they belong. Next get some clear silicone sealant glue. Run a bead of the sealant fully around the emblem or just in spots as you prefer. Let sealant glue set up waa laa. No metal tabs needed.:D
Oh by the way, if already have not said so, I really like your 4X4, it was well worth the wait!! http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...chicken1-1.gif |
Thanks Dave, I'll keep my eye out for it.
Thanks for the props on my truck! :D Also, I took the front lift blocks out today and I got the 67-72 western mirrors. The mirrors look great but, of course, came with no mounting hardware. Is this something I can get at my local hardware store? It looks like it takes some kind of carriage bolt, square holes in the brackets?? |
