I know but the average re-builder is not going to do that. Of course their are specialty shops but they aren't you're average re-builder. When I was drag racing cars there was B&M Hydro but they rebuilt PLUS. There is nothing to dis-agree with, we are talking about 2 different things.

I am only addressing re-builders of steering boxes.

I don't think Stewart was comparing Transmissions and steering gears, He was referring to shops that go the extra mile in whatever they are rebuilding, there are two things you will never support Brent no matter how many people have good luck with them one is Redhead boxes and two is aftermarket lockouts, At least your consistent..:-X22

What's aftermarket lockouts?
I am consistent because I worked with rebuilt parts every day for 10 years, I know about them. What's the extra mile? Nobody makes special parts for rebuilds and of course some do a better job but how do you know R H does? Because they said so? I don't believe that thing about boring for needle bearings for a minute. Maybe to salvage a case now and then but that's to their advantage. I would bet money if they got a core in with a shaft riding directly on the case and it was not worn they wouldn't touch it.

Fair enough.

When I read this sentence from your above post....

Nobody in the rebuild biz "fixes anything that ain't broke",

I read that to mean you meant all rebuilders for any product. I thought you were making a blanket statement.

I'm gonna be getting a rebuilt (if I don't rebuild my own) box one of these summers.

Now that right there is how to ensure you are getting a better than OEM quality rebuilt part that meets or exceeds the need of your truck. Unfortunately even those that do have the skills/tools often do not have the time.

That is the problem! No time to be had for fun personal stuff around here. Especially time to pull the box out, take it apart, and then wait for parts to be shipped and reassemble and install.

Now if someone had an extra box laying around that I could take apart to inspect what parts I need and stuff. I could waste all the time with that because my X would still be drivable. :-wink

I love doing things myself because like you mentioned I then know they are done right and the time was taken to make sure the little things don't get looked over.
