Seems to be the HIGH average gas mileage 300-6's get around 19-20 on the highway. That seems to be the general consensus, maybe 19mpg driven luckily with good gas can get you 19mpg. And in the city, they aren't much better than my 302, according to what most people say. My 302 gets good mileage anywhere that I have to go slow, but it's the highway that kills me with no OD. Good mileage = 14-16mpg. Either way, I definitely see 24, and what you first claimed, 26 mpg to be an error. Maybe your odometer is off, maybe your tank holds more than you think, I don't know.
Maybe one day you took a trip down a 400 mile mountain road, and got to coast most of the way. Who's to say? But you got to understand where we come from when we question 24-26mpg in a 300-6 full size truck. |
Well, I get my 14-16mpg on backroads where I can cruise an easy 20-30mph or around there. 55mph probably gets around 9-10 mpg for me, but I'm running between 2200-2300 RPM. I think my manual transmission helps my gas mileage on the backroads. Between being able to stay around 1000RPM and also coast in neutral sometimes, I get good gas mileage in certain cases. I go 2nd through 4th by 20mph, and only use first to screw around in. I have never 'needed' first unless off road and want to make a bumpy trail feel smoother by crawling through it.
My gas mileage is never good on the highway, though. It's just awful going down the highway. 45mph is about the limit for moderate gas mileage (probably 12-13mpg) in my truck with my gearing. 55mph and above just sucks it down. |

My 79 carbed 300 would gets 15MPG at 55 MPH all day long, provied everything is tuned just right. It takes a fair amount of attention to keep it tuned just right.
The 79 is 4x4 with 4 speed manual NP435. Now my 92 F250 has 4.10s and a 5 speed ZF that will get 17 MPG if I behave myself. I hate to run it much past 70 or not for long times. |
where do you find those 5 speeds lol... i do like the ratios in my t170... i just want a gear so low that i dont need to use my clutch... but im guessing i either get a posi rear with bad highway miles or a non posi rear with good highway miles
unless im tring to spend money LOL |

why couldnt it? youd never beleive how much little stuff tricks and tweaks that you can do to get better gas mileage a buddy of mine said he got a newer dodge cargo van to get 50 mpg with a 318 ... granted thats when its empty and ive learned that having the right exhaust setup will change your fuel economy and im guessing a rebuilt carb helps to... (ive heard our 1 barrels like to get rebuilt)

my dads 95 F-150 sees an average of 18 mpg 50/50 mix driving but he doesnt fly with it, but he doesnt baby it. that is with the A/C on doing the speed limit with a bone stock engine but with everything working properly. mine on the other hand, i get about 12 on average but im not really concerned with the milage. if i was i wouldnt have 33s, stock 3:55s gearing and drive like a normal mid 20 yr old :-D
i can see a 300 getting 24-26 mpg in a stripper truck with a manual trans and overdrive with 2.87 gearing doing the speed limit. quite a few people on FSP are reporting 20+ mpg with thier trucks. |
