More time - more flames
Had some son time and we wanted to get the background finished... So here he is spraying a layer of red. We went from darkest to "fire engine" red in 3 mixes.
http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0399.jpg Several views of the different highlights of color.. http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0400.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0401.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0402.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0403.jpg Pulled the tape to see what a poor masking job we did. Fortunately, this has to be 2000-grit sanded to fade it (and clean up the mess :-banghead overspray, that is) http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0404.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0405.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0407.jpg Hope to 2000 wet sand tomorrow and tape layer 2 of three.... |
No news... Army took kid last Sunday, but may get him back soon (like next week) as his back is a little screwed from being thrown out of perfectly good airplanes a few too many times. They don't want to fix him - they'd rather have the VA do it! :-drink
So a little sanding here and there, and I was afraid I was going to have to figure out the rest of the flame layers by my lonesome... :-hair P.S. Nobody said Hi ! I guess the flames turned everyone off.. |
So, a little more pain...
Really didn't like the amount of color, so I 1500 gritted it down and mixed some black with the red to tone down the edge. A paint guy I trust told me to wet the area with slightly soapy water to see how the clearcoat would look. http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0413.jpg It kind of looks bad, but under the soapy water it really picked up some depth and fade. Then I taped and shot a second layer of brighter red over top. http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0414.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0419.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0420.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0421.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0422.jpg The army gave back the kid as his back was too bad for deployment. I was going to surprise him, but I ended up "screwin' the pooch" when I put the Yellow on. That got sanded and retaped in a hurry!! http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0427.jpg I'll save the redo for next post.... |
OK.. Retaped and reshot orange, white highlight then yellow over. Just some picts below. Now have to 1500 sand for look, and kill a little overspray and then slop on the clearcoat. Wish me luck, or I'll be painting it all black again ! :-banghead

I'm not a big paint person but that looks great so far. I know it'll look 10x better after your done with clear over it. It looks a little funny in the last post. The red flames have so much depth and the yellow and orange don't.

Looking good.:-jammin The only thing I would change if it were mine is I'd probably use another color to break up some of the yellow. But mine would also be shades of blue and white.:-blah:-D
Can't wait to see the clear coat on it!:-jammin |
As we say in Pittsburgh, Yinz are right. I'm going to bend the ear of my paint guy and his folks, probably buy a detail gun (airbrush would be overkill - on me) and work down the yellow. I'm pretty much on new ground for what I'm doing (at least for me). I want the "on fire" look, not the "I can barely see the cool flames if I'm standing in the right light". :-huh

First, thanks for the feedback. I'm not a body guy, or a paint guy, but I am a crazy SOB and will keep on trying until something works.
A note from my paint guy and the performance guy.. "If you're happy with it, then screw everybody else. You didn't pay some guy $7000 to spray the best flames in the world on your truck, you did it yourself !" You guys were right, the yellow was too much. I went back and looked at the picture I was trying to mimic and saw the error in my ways. Here's a shot before I finished the nose and washed the truck.. http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0433.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0435.jpg My kid came and helped me with the nose.. Then he said.. stop painting and clearcoat it! Any more and you'll screw it up. So here's the result. Lot's of sanding before the next coat of clear but I think I'm happy. :9 http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0436.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0437.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0438.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0439.jpg http://www.computerliterates.com/47f...b/100_0440.jpg |
Great Job! :-drink It looks sweet.8D
|
Wow, nice job! It looks on fire to me!
|
Looks like its entering the atmosphere. Thats sweet!
|
No one should lie to you (and you know yourself!) that it looks like a "show-car" flame job, 'cause it doesn't -- but I agree with the general sentiment that: It's YOURS, you did it yourself and YOU like it (hopefully!). In the end, that's what SHOULD matter!!
|
Just read through your whole article here. First off very very neat thread of your truck! I cant believe what you have turned that ol truck into!
The engine looks beautiful! I must say you started to scare me in the ways of the paint job, i guess i just didnt know what you were trying to get out of it. But after seeing it at the end and with the clear coat on it i must say i do like it now! Very cool that your doing all this your self, it must be a world of knowledge and experience. really hope too see you finish it up as it seems your getting very close now! Your son would be proud and once you get done he will still be at your side riding with you. Again awesome work, even if it takes some trial and error! (gotta learn somehow! 8D) |

Again awesome work, even if it takes some trial and error! (gotta learn somehow! 8D) Trial and error are the keywords! Way too much sanding, repainting, sanding, buying more paint, painting, sanding, smoking cigs, draggin' the kid over to comment (and maybe help), sanding, painting. Then enough was enough. Paint flames for 6 months or get truck on road. I'd like to enjoy it before I'm too old to drive it! }> |
John, I think it looks great! Looking forward to seeing it with all of the trim on it!
