i would keep a 10mm socket and ratchet with the CPS at all times, as that is what it takes to change it. Yeah, I keep a full set of tools with the truck at all times, except when the wife drives it. I reseated my CPS connector and cleaned the green boot, time to cross the fingers!! Took it to the gas station and filled it up and it was all good, I hope the "Pop" works for me.

I really hope we are able to get a class action, but I am confident in saying the process is laborious. There has to be some lawyers out there that drive PSDs on this website.

I just replaced the CPS in a 2001 7.3 PSD . when i went to try the pop method i found the connector all oilie so i changed out the CPS dont know were else the oil could have come from was,nt oilie on the outside.So if you want this old one for testing you are welcome to just let me know.May be a good one to take apart to see how it ticks.

CPS factory recall
Just to let you know (if you don't already), FORD did issue a factory recall on the sensor. Which an authorized dealer is mandated by law, to the best of my knowledge, to relplace free of charge.
I had my done on my '02 F350 PSD today (10/13/10) at Purvis Ford in Stafford VA. No charge. I am not the original owner of the truck. 07S57- Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Inspection/Replacement The FORD recall info phone is 800-392-3673. Just thought this may help. |
ECM update
Also, there is a ECM update that goes with the FORD replacement cam position sensor. I gues that should be done as well.

The wipers are in on it
I have a 99 F350 and have replaced many CPS caus they are cheap. the truck always leaves me stranded when its raining or snowing. So i started elimanating things that happen in the wet that dont when dry. So driving in the rain with wipers on the engine sputters and stalls, no wipers(or visibility) and truck runs fine. I took it to ford garage and they couldnt find anything on the computer code reader. Of course the wipers were not on

i think there can be a problem in the steering column....a short that can cause it to cut out. Did you put some sealant on the CPS when you put it in? Moisture coming into the CPS will 'kill' the truck, not really 'sputter and stall'.... But the truck should always start right back up. You may have a water leak around your windshield and causeing some electrical issues. I would like to see someone who has this problem put a CB radio "noise filter" in the wire that goes to the wiper motor, just to see if the electrical brush "hash" is what's confusing the CPS when the wipers are on.
Or maybe some large ferrite beads. I still think it's a ground problem, however..... Pop |
I had this problem for the first time last night on my way home from work. When I use the throttle pedal it will surge and die, surge and die, etc. but when I turn on the cruise it accelerates normally without any sputter and continues until I have to stop and restart. I took it apart this morning and cleaned the plug and connector with contact cleaner and reinstalled. Seems ok now. I'll keep you posted.
