I had a 2001 ex v10 and when I used to drive back from Pennsylvania to the jersey shore I sometimes got 17 mpg empty, not loaded , figuring it out manually, and now have a 2005 ex v10 and now get about 14-16mpg,, and I don't know why but the 2001 I think had 4:30 gear and the 2005 has 3:73 and I used to go faster with the 4:30gears and got better mileage??????? I think under right circumstances u might be able to come close to 20 mpg

Yes, those circumstances being a different vehicle. However, we're talking V10 Excursions here. :)

i'm STILL very happy with the 14.1 highway...8ish in town.

I wonder sometimes how much regional differences of what constitutes highway speeds makes a difference in mpg people mention. Around here highway driving mean 70 to 75 miles an hour and having a 55 miles an hour hilly Road in backcountry so it's not true highway mileage. I've never got higher than 12.1 miles to the gallon on the highway although ironically I was pulling a trailer.

I heard about some diesel vs gas talk around here. :-wink

My brother was quite surprised about our one way nonstop trip to WV this summer pulling a car trailer in the 7.3 X. Rolling into WV my trip meter was in the 700's. When we finally filled up in WV before picking up a truck on the trailer I calculated 17.1mpg. :-jammin

So here are the numbers,
235 miles (about 175 were highway, 60 were city)
At least 4 turn off and restarts
Highway was hilly at times
City was stop and go with hills.

15.56 gallons to fill it up. Needle was at 5/8 of a tank. Like I said if each 1/4 is 10 gallons then 5/8 of tank would be 15. Believe what you want I trust my gauge.

235 / 15.56 = 15.10mpg combined city/highway

Now before you said I told you so...
When I hit 200 miles I was at 3/4 tank. The last 60 miles or so was city with a lot of hills and stop and go. So let's say I got 10 mpg w/city driving. I really do believe with no stops and all flat highway we could see 20 mpg with the v10 excursion. Well at least mine. I did not pad any numbers or make any up. If you choose not to believe that is your choice.

Do it. We'd all love to be proved wrong and then figure out why your truck is special and how to make our V10s special too! :-X04 Take some pictures of your odometer and gas receipts when you hit your 20MPG mark.

I could not get 20 mpg in my 4x4 V10 X if I was coasting downhill with a 40 mph tailwind. It gets 10-14.

You can put in 3-4 more gallons after it clicks off showing full. It's best to average over several tankfuls to get a true average.

You could probably beat 20 MPG as long as you could coast a reasonable speed the whole distance, but where on earth are you going to go that you can coast down even a slight hill for 400 miles straight? And even if you could find such a place, you'd get about 2-5 MPG on the return trip.

I use my phone to monitor the fuel consumption from time to time and as long as I'm coasting the numbers are awesome. As soon as I so much as TOUCH the gas pedal, the reading drops to around 5 MPG. By the time the ups and downs average out, you're right -- 10-14.

At least there is one discussion between the gas /diesel crowd that runs along the same lines.

In both camps there is always someone that believes their engine, out of the 10s of thousands of exact same engines, is somehow special and gets mileage way beyond the average of everyone else.

The absolute best I ever saw out of my V10 was a shade over 17 and that was with factory tires, factory 3.73 gears, relatively flat terrain, ALL highway, and me driving like a granny never exceeding 65 mph. On that occasion I was trying my absolute best to get the best mileage I could at normal highway speeds. I've never seen mileage that good since.


I doubt my Ex could hit 20 mpg if I put it in neutral and shoved it out of the space shuttle.
