What is the story behind that?
Since you asked. Back in 1975 I belonged to a 4X4 club, and several members had snowmobiles. They convinced me to buy a couple, and a trailer for a good price. We decided to go on a day ride in the Blue Mountains. We were about 18-19 miles from the pickups when the other 5 machines crapped out. They had shared gas from the same can (I didn't). It was about 3:00 in the afternoon and we were just turning back to the pickups. The temp dropped like a stone to -22, and it started snowing HARD. I spent the next 10 hours transferring people one at a time back to the pickups. Several people had frostbite and had to be treated. If I had gotten lost or broke down people could have died........I vowed never to put myself in that kind of situation again. I sold the snowmobiles the next Monday....:-X09 |
lol:)
I have never had more then one machine go down in a group. Heck, even if we loose spark to one hole, we still have close to 80hp from the other one:) We ride in groups of two or more and pack survival kits to be safe, but I have only been towed out once in the last 10 years (blown crank, was lucky it happened where we could pull it out without a chopper) |
Snowmobiles...............they just get you further into the boonies and further from help when that eventual BAD thing DOES happen..........weather conducive to snowmobile use doesn't help things either!.........I too left that "toy" phase behind long ago.

i never wander far when im on a sled... fourwheelers, sure. sleds, no...
|
We pack beacons, probes, shovels, first aid kits, survival kits, food, water, tools, spear gas, and sometimes a sat phone. Most of us have avalanche, survival, and first aid training. We travel in groups of two or more, with a check in person in town that knows our planned root, along with our expected return time. We either know the area very well, or have a good guide.
There is the rare case where people spend the night on the mountain because of poor weather, but that generally happens to people new in the area and too lazy to find a guide. Approx. 30miles from the trucks and ontop of a 3000' climb https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/p...ictureid=31227 From the other side of the valley, Sled is on the ridge in the center. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/p...ictureid=27457 |
thats pretty freakin gnarly dude...

Just another day in paridise:)
2' of fresh powder that day. Was an amzing workout for both sled and rider:) In the first picture, I am stopped to allow my cluthes to cool down. I could have cooked an egg on my primary:) |
hahaha! i dont doubt it. them centrifugal clutches can get nasty. never could get the one on my gokart to work right either... :-X09

My sleds got so old that I was spending too much time working on them.
Sold them cheap. We always tried to stay in a well defined radius. No disasters but some grim experiences. All in all though, it was a great deal of entertainment. Especially when the kids were younger, they really got a charge out of the sleds. |
im more a fan of quads myself now...
